Just got my new car and driver and read the article on Ford's new Raptor truck. Geez, 450 hp out of a 3.5 v6 engine. I thought of our 3.5 in the later Troopers. Wow, that's taking an engine to it's limits. It's got a price tag to match.

The last version had a 6.2L supercharged V8. You can thank the EPA for the switch. Either way that truck is a beast and I want one.

I can't see a v6 being a substitute for a v8. I'd still give it whirl, just wouldn't buy one at that price.

I'd say that is a bargain for what you get - if it's what you're after. If you want a full size truck with 400+hp, 13+" suspension travel, locking rear diff + limited slip front, capable of 18mpg hwy with 35" tires, all the modern comforts, (and a warranty), I don't know what you'd expect to pay, but that seems like quite a bit to get for $50k. A top end Tacoma, Wrangler, or Colorado will put you in the 40k neighborhood, and there are 4runners that cost over $50k.

To me the Raptor is kinda like a corvette of the 4x4 truck world. Not everyone's cup of tea, but could hold it's own on the track/trail with the best of them, without the race car/trophy truck price tag.

The question for me is how this EcoBoost is going to hold up. Pushing turbos to the max is not great for a consumer vehicle where the owner isn't interested in meticulous maintenance. There have been some problems with their earlier engines blowing seals and eating turbos, severe carbon deposits, and general badness.
98 Amigo, 2.2 5sp 4x4, 4.77 gears and factory LSD.
Power nothing - No power windows, no power locks, no power engine. ;)
Even the hubs are manual now.

I'd probably prefer a less complex system myself as well. But, the ecoboost(s) have been around for 5 years now, and I'm sure there will always be little things to iron out, and it is a complex engine, but they are also in the highest production pickups in the world maybe (f150) and explorers, etc. The bugs should show up pretty quick. I'd say they are fully committed to the boosted smaller engines now for the next 5-10 years in their lighter duty and specialty rigs, vs. the n/a high displacement mills they put in the f250-f350. The version of this same engine that they are putting in the new GT will be 600hp! Out of 3.5l!
