Less than a month away, and I think I have snapped.

IF  I can get the Trooper together, and it passes inspection, I am going to bring it for it's first outing. I am most likely biting off more than I should, and this could end badly, but that is my goal. This also will mean that I will have to rough it and do some cold weather camping. Really not sure about that part, but first I have to get the rear brakes finished (parking brake cables are seized and one caliper seems shot) and it should pass inspection. It seems to hold all its fluids other than the leaking caliper, and it is running well, now that I have run a few tanks of fuel through it. I have all the parts to finish it, and hope to knock it out Monday.

I also got a new stereo for it for Christmas, so I won't have to listen to the sound of wind for the 3 hr drive up there. I might even try to talk Smitty into driving the Heep up since I will be in the Trooper. He might be able to keep up! Come to think of it, we both will have the same size engine, and will both be on stock tires. I could be a good comparison, if his will stay running right (intermittent miss). This is a last minute change, so I am going to have to scramble to reorganize, but all will hinge on the Trooper this coming week.

Good luck to both of you.

May the force be with you Mike! But don't get too worked up if it doesn't work out with the Trooper. This may end up just being a hang around the campground trip. That's fine too!

I'm shooting to do this. Looking to put new tires on the Tundra next week and might even have a working winch by then.

Well, I was a good boy and Santa brought me a new stereo for the Trooper. I also got new emergency brake cables. I installed the stereo yesterday, and got the cables done today. My brakes are a lot better, but something still isn't right. The pedal just doesn't feel right. It seems to stop well, but the E brake still doesn't hold pressure. The good news is that the stereo works!! lol

Still have some time, but my repair budget is not looking good this month. Christmas did a number on my wallet.

Bleed the brakes again. Left rear, right rear, right front, left front. Get a quart of fluid and go round a few times. Bleed the proportioning valve on the fender too.

Make sure the V's on the rear pistons line up with the pins on the rear pads. Otherwise the pads will not sit flat. Makes for a weird feeling pedal.

You still going to Massanuttan the week prior, or have we lost our scout also? Not going to be the same without you there...

I am still going to Massenutten in between puppy sitting stints, but I doubt if you really need a scout, With all the rain, I can't image any snow on the trails.

My daughter got the German Shepard pup last year. He is now a year old and 90+ lbs, quite a handful when he sees a squirrel. She just got back from 2 weeks in Europe and then headed out to Texas. She gets back for a week and out to Thailand. So, I have a new job, puppy sitting. But it isn't all bad, she brought back a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue from her Europe trip for me. Sweet! Also, her travel is supposed to stop next month.

OK so who is looking good for this trip at this point. I'm in unless the weather gets stupid here and I can't load the camper on the truck.

My crew will be coming. As of the moment it looks like Mike Fogg, Bobby (and Rocky), Smitty, and myself. For the sake of the other not-so-excited about tent camping wimps that are coming with me, I am back to bringing the camper. I was just thinking that we haven't discussed any meals yet, so here is what I am thinking and feel free to interject any suggestions the group may have. Saturday night I'm thinking of making a big batch of spaghetti and red sauce. I usually doctor up my sauce with some ground sausage, and fresh veggies. I can throw some garlic bread in the oven also. This will be quick, simple, warm, and filling. Thoughts??

Sounds good. as always I come equipped to feed myself. But I'll go for some of that. Looks like so far maybe one person from the truck camper forum as well.

I spoke with Hack. He is down that way and says there is about an inch of snow on the ground right now.

Yep and very cold temps, with the highs in the upper 20s so the snow isn't melting.

So far the weather is looking good for the trip though it's still a ways out. It's supposed to rain some between now and then so I expect some mud.

Looks like we have at least one person besides myself coming with a truck camper.

Feel free to bring an armload or 2 of firewood.

Very little snow left as the temps have topped 50. Rain expected today.

So here we are a week away and things are looking good weather wise. This warm spell definitely eased my mind about getting the camper up in there. Times like this make me miss the smaller camper. I will go to the grocery store and provision up for the weekend. Our plan is to roll out as soon as possible Friday night. Probably wont leave Richmond till 6:00. That puts us at camp around 8-9:00 depending on how it goes.

I'll be going down early in the day Friday if not Thursday.

Anyplace in the campground you prefer. I usually camp by the stream near the bathrooms.

It was an awesome weekend. The weather was great, and no one got hurt.

It was raining when I left town and most of the way up the mountain, but stopped just before I got there. It was around 9:00 Friday night when I pulled into the campground. For me, that is early. Squatch did an excellent job helping me back my camper through the darkness without hitting anything. We parked it in a spot close enough to level that I just left it hooked to the truck, grabbed a beverage, and went up to his site to enjoy the campfire. My buddy Mike had drove over from Fredericksburg that afternoon, so he was already there along with Squatch, and another guy he knew from his truck camper forum. We spent the remainder of the evening, swapping stories, and catching up. I called it a night around 1:00 am and crawled into my bed for some much needed sleep.

No shock to anyone who knows me, but I slept in Saturday morning. When I woke around 10:30, my buddy Mike had abandoned the camper and gone back to Squatch's site. With the morning light I reevaluated my camper location, shifted it a bit, and set up camp. As I was starting to make breakfast Mike wandered back over and we had a small feast of eggs, sausage, toast, and coffee. It was agreed that no one wanted to take there "nice vehicles" up the mountain mainly because we didn't feel like disconnecting, or having to close up the truck campers. That being said it was decided to set out on a hike to the top of the ridge next to the campground. I stayed back, as I am just getting over being sick for the past two weeks, and didn't want to push my body too hard and relapse. Plus, I knew that another friend of mine was due to drive up at some point and didn't want the site to be abandoned when he arrived.

So Squatch, Mike, Brian and his dog Jukebox set out on their hike around lunchtime. I spent the time relaxing and resting in camp enjoying the 60 degree weather. Sure enough about an hour later my friend Bobby drove up. He and I caught up on things, and build a fire to prepare for that evening. I can't speak to the hike other than the group returned very tired. We all had dinner, then sat around the campfire and repeated the previous night's ritual of story telling, and general laughter. Things broke up just before midnight as the rain started, and we packed up what was outside to ease the morning's departure.

It rained on and off throughout the night however it had stopped when we awoke in the morning. My group broke camp around 9:00 and we headed our separate ways. It was a nice, relaxing weekend and I look forward to doing it again.

Lastly, I thought some of you might like to see a gift I received this weekend. My birthday is next week, and one of my friends that came up this weekend camping with us makes knives. This was a gift I received from him. It is made from an old railroad spike. It is heavy, but the curve of it feels very comfortable in the hand.
