Fort Frederick, MD

Postby Hack » Tue Nov 08, 2016 5:52 pm

It is great to be retired. Before I got home from Hallowarrrie 2016, Squatch called me and told me not to unpack or put the popup in the garage. So the next day we headed to Fort Frederick (about 90 miles from our homes between Hagerstown and Hancock, MD) and spent the night. Didn't do any wheeling, just hung out around the park.

Nothing like a campground to yourself off season.

Cool! You're right Squatch, the off-season camping is fantastic!

Since Fort Frederick is so close to the both of us, Squatch and I decided to drive up and check out the Super Moon (the closest pass of the moon to the earth since 1948). The moon reflected so much light that it was almost like daylight

Here is a shot of the moon over my camper.

During the day we spent a lot of time by Big Pool

and the Potomac River.

We also visited the fort. Squatch will post those pictures. The really neat thing was how Squatch's camera took photos through the float glass windows that we couldn't see clearly through.

For 2 days we had the entire 29 site campground to ourselves. Just before we left, however, a guy in a class A motorhome came in and decided that the best available site was right by us. It was definitely time to leave!

It is just a local trip for both of us. Basically stock the cooler and have camp set up about 2 hours later.

I've done this trip once a week for the last 3 weeks. Hack has joined me for the last 2 trips. Real close to home and $7 night off season. I'm pretty much just running up to have a campfire and it's been great for sorting out my processes and packing with the camper.

1st trip solo.

Kinda have it to ourselves!

Reason for the trip.

2nd trip I didn't take pics. The rest are the 3rd trip. We went up to witness the Super, Super Moon.

Big Pool from the boat ramp. This is a lake that was made when the were building the C+O canal. Like the river it's low right now.

The Potomac river behind my campsite.

I moved the truck to take advantage of unblocked sun to charge the camper battery with solar.
Image

Hacks cool little Coleman Colorado!

Fort Fredrick. Built for French and Indian war to protect settlers in 1754. Abandoned by the army in 1759. Bought back by the state in 1922 from a black freeman. Rebuilt by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the '30's. Maryland's 1st state park.

Camera view through windows we couldn't see through. These buildings are open in tourist season.

Camp store from the top of the wall.

Packed and ready to leave.

The goofball that moved in next to us. It's a lot closer than it looks. Fortunatly we were leaving. Pretty typical in this state. Clueless people! An entire campground empty and they actually pulled into Hacks driveway to back into their spot. Had we been staying I would have said something.
