Pre-Run Moab March 2-6, 2017

Postby SAS » Wed Mar 08, 2017 8:39 pm

A group of us from trailsoffroad.com made a quick trip to Moab to do some pre-running for the season, updating photos and videos on some trail guides and writing new ones.

Five nights in Moab, and time flies when you're on the trail. We camped at Bride Arch Canyon (BLM designated site) off of Gemini Bridges. This area has five or six dispersed campsites, all suitable for small groups; we were in #2, it was adequate for six or seven trucks.

Overall we ran 10 or 11 trails. Hey Joe Canyon was certainly the most difficult for a stock Trooper on 29's. LOL

Trooper on the Klondike Bluffs trail. This wash ledge had a step at the very top, and I stalled on the first attempt. Dug in and balanced on two wheels, spinning, took a strap to pull backwards and get another attempt. Todd said sarcastically "we're going to have to winch you up!"

I don't think so!

That looks like a nice place to camp, somewhat sheltered from the wind?

I did Hey Joe Canyon a few years ago, the tamarisk tore the vent trim off of my rear side window. But your first gen is a bit narrower, maybe it wasn't so bad for you.

It was, until Sunday evening; the winds came howling through that canyon--literally sounded like a train when it was spooling-up, and then it shook the heck out of the RTT. Made me think for future base-camping, that I want a 12x16 wall tent, with a wood stove! hahaha I am getting old.

I have pictures and video from Hey Joe, just haven't yet compiled my clips to make a little Trooper feature.

The problem in Hey Joe was the narrow squeezes combined with low ground clearance (I'm on 29's!). The stock JK on 33's called it quits before I did, but I didn't go look at the obstacle where he said "no mas". I turned around, and then turned his JK around while he and Ige went forward to finish the GPS track and pictures.

I did get high-centered on the way out, when I slipped off a rock, landing on the crossmember. Nothing a high-lift, a few stacker rocks, and fifteen minutes can't overcome! LOL

Here is the video entering Hey Joe; this is the point I got stuck on the way out, trying to drive the same line.

Yeah, that seems to happen in Moab some nights. Last time I camped in Moab, one night the winds kicked up and after a while I got out of the tent and slept in the drivers seat of the Trooper. It wasn't great but it was much more restful than a wildly flapping tent.
