BRAKE LIGHT WIRING :(

Postby FerociousChihuahua » Mon Apr 24, 2017 9:44 pm

Please help the Chihuahua!
Until this is fixed, this Trooper isn't roadworthy, and my ShiChi cannot enjoy a nice drive :(

So here goes: my problem is that my brake lights won't brighten. I circuit tested two brake switches, so I know those aren't the problem. I have an 86 Trooper, the rear door wiring harness was all janky and had household wire for half the shiznat. (At the spot behind rear driver wheel well). So I chopped the harness out of my 87 donor mobile and attached it to the remaing harness on the 86. All wires matched, except for the 14 gauge lime green wire, but it isn't integrated into the wiring of the taillight anyway. And both rear brake lights won't brighten. All other lights work, reverse, turn signals, headlights/ running lights of rear brake lights, they all work. Except for the braking bright light. Tested bulbs, switches, it's a wire somewhere. And neither brake light brightens, left or right.
I attached photos of my butt connector attachments of the wiring harness and also the harness plug of the left rear taillight. I'm assuming one wire is in the wrong spot, I'm hoping someone can help The Chihuahua.

Yikes, that doesn't look like fun. I didn't see any mention of checking the fuse for the stop lights. You are probably going to have to troubleshoot it with a multimeter or test light while a helper presses the brake pedal.

This is one of my dogs, her name is Chichi.

On the 86 is there a separate fuse just for the stopping lights? Because the brake lights (running lights) are lit when I turn on the light switch. They just don't brighten when the pedal is pressed. I guess I will train my Huahua to press the brake pedal and test all circuits. Maybe someone else has any more insight?

I've owned many vehicles and every single one of them had separate fuses for the brake lights. According to the diagram in the following link, your brake lights are on fuse number 5 in the diagram. http://manual.pajero4x4.ru/?wpfb_dl=7823

I really appreciate the info Rick. Thanks for your time and help! I'll dig into this more after work today. And Chichi is cute dog! Is she an apple head Huahua?

Ok got the fuse swapped, it was fried.
Now the braking lights work!
Thanks for the help Rick. Guess that was a dumb oversight on my part lol.
Thank god I rewired it all correctly lol.
Now just got to rewire the 2 plate light wires and I'm good to go.
