2nd gen trooper led headlights -product review

Postby Ricky » Tue Mar 14, 2017 6:40 pm

I added LED bulbs to my factory headlights several months ago. However I didn't want to post a review of them until I used em for a while. I am very happy to report that these things work great!

Any down the road shots or before after pics? From my experience with these type of bulbs they tend to not be focused properly and blind on coming traffic. They do light up what's in front of you very well but tend to be like driving on high beams all the time. Does oncoming traffic flash you often? Do they flicker? Were any adjustments required like reaiming, grinding the housing, patch harness or were they plug and play? Do they retain the lo/hi beam function?

They are bright but if aimed properly they won't blind oncoming traffic, although you still will get flashed occasionally if someone looks over because they notice how bright they are. Mine are now aimed so at 40 or 50 feet,
when I am behind a car, the lights for the most part are focused on the rear bumper of the car in front of me, a normal height passanger car. I frigging hate it when a jacked pickup is behind me with HID or LEDs and light up my interior and hit all my mirrors, and they are also the ones that blind you oncoming. A little common sense can prevent both. Both the round eye LEDs and the bulbs for the square eyes are plug and play although I wired the round eyes on a relay instead of a straight switched "flashlight" circuit. No flicker on our trucks as they are older, mostly a problem on the newer jeeps and I can't remember the reason why now although I researched it before I bought mine, but anti-flicker adapters are available if needed and again are plug and play if it is an issue. Both flavors have hi and lo beam function. If there is any trick to them, it is getting them aimed properly. The cross on the garage door method at 35 to 50 feet works but they are different and I keep the drivers side lower and more to the right than I did with halogen lights.

I also have really really bright off road LEDs on the front bumper, with covers over them. These are the ones that should never be used on road. They will blind oncoming as well as anyone you are behind. My opinion of anyone who turns these on in fog, rain, or snow while on road is they should have their drivers license revoked. Actually they should be shot or arrested for stupidity. I am surprised by how many times I've had this happen

LED's are a good cheap upgrade. 6000k is good bright white light that pulls almost no power and the good ones last a long time. Pricing still seems to be dropping too.

The base of the bulbs are threaded so you can screw them in and out of the base to adjust the beam. It took me a few times to get it just right, but 'v had no issues with people flashing me on the road. Will snap a pic on the way home this evening. Currently in the shop working on the trooper now.

"Currently in the shop working on the trooper now"

I think I've heard that line before  my wife has heard it a lot.

Love my LED lights on my first gen.......Willie thought his HID bulbs were brighter until I actually turned mine on and he realized that he might as well had a squirrel hold a candle on the bumper compared to mine LOL

Laughing, I finally got the headlights aimed correctly but still don't think the round eye LED setup is as bright as the LED bulbs in the square eyes. That's ok though because my off road lights would likely melt your truck if you were in the way when I turned them on.

Is yours a sealed-beam conversion, or did the '89 have H4 housings?

If the day comes when I go William Foster (movie reference) I will probably take a baseball bat to HID and LED conversions. The glare coming from them irks me.

Think Carrie Underwood, "I took a Louisville Slugger to his left headlight". Good mood music...
