1996 acura slx (trooper) charging issue

Postby want2wheel » Thu Mar 09, 2017 7:42 pm

I have a 1996 acura slx in the shop that has a charging problem. The alternator is new, and I can make it charge by unhooking the ECM or computer wire. This is the white wire with the blue stripe. When it is unhooked I get 14.6 volts at the battery. Any other time I only have around 12 volts. Thank you for any help. Rob.

The 96/97 Acura/Trooper/Rodeo voltage regulator has a "Gain Control" feature that allows the ECM to turn off the alternator under certain engine load conditions like rapid acceleration. If the old alternator responded correctly to the Gain Control signal you may have installed the wrong alternator. Your best option is to leave the Gain Control wire disconnected so the battery can charge normally. Later year alternators do not use Gain Control.

Buster, thank you for that response. With the diagram I feel better about this "fix." Rob.
