They're smds (surface mount diodes). You can do it, but you have to be pretty precise with a soldering iron and try not to burn the board. Once you remove the volume knob, the front face is held on by push tabs all around face. The face electrical connector is a slip type connections so as long as you pull it off straight you shouldn't have a problem.
I'd suggest opening the face and look at it and then decide if you want to attempt it.
In my '01 Rodeo, all of the radio lights were no longer working. I decided it was easier to just replace the radio. I picked up a Radio/CD combo from my local pick-a-part for $10.
