Aaaaaaaaggggg transmission 2001 4wd trooper

Postby Jc3321 » Thu May 18, 2017 9:32 pm

I have a 2001 3.2 4wd trooper. Today I went to put it in gear and .......nothing. gear selector went through all gears. No movement. Tried to put it in park and it just buzzes like a car moving thrown in to park. If I put it in 4h I can drive normally , but something ain't right. Trans is 3k old replaced 2 months ago.

Sounds like your linkage is all screwed up. Make sure both P and L positions on the shifter up top equates to P and L on the manual valve. Loosen the nut on the linkage and mess around with it. Possibly just is out of alignment.

You'll know if its out of whack. Start by putting the shifter in P then loosen the nut. If its off wiggle the transmission side and its probably in-between positions, it should fall into place.

If the Trooper drives normally in 4H, but not in 4L or 2WD. That suggests something is amiss with the TRANSFER case. Perhaps playing with the transmission P and L positions will not lead to anything.

I would put some attention into the transfer shifter linkage.

I'm confused. If is a US specification 2001 Trooper then is a 3.5L. That's here nor there but if is an auto would be TOD where it is in 4wd all the time and is is a manual then is more conventional transfer case. I'll go out on limb and assume is a manual. If that is the case it would seem possible for there to be a failure where the transfer case sends no power to the rear wheels but in 4wd appears ok as is being driven by the front differential.

Either way it might help folks to know if is an auto with TOD or a manual.

Judging by his original post he mentions "putting it in 4h" this means that it's definitely not a TOD transfer case. If it drives fine in 4h but not 2h I'd agree with vanduker. Its something in the transfer case. Do those manual t-cases use synchronizers? It sounds like whatever gear control the 2h position isn't engaged properly thus giving him neutral. Transmission probably does work fine because when he put it in P the output shaft was still spinning because pressing brakes won't stop the transmission output shaft.

Just to clarify. Yes this is an automatic TOD. The only way to get movement was to place the trans in N and the 4wd lever in 4H. 4L also works, but with the front end in the middle N I get nothing from the gear selector.

The TOD transfer case doesn't have a 4h position. Only HIGH which accounts for 2wd high and TOD which detects rear wheel slippage and directs power to the front wheels ONLY WHEN ITS NEEDED through the means of a clutch pack.

Ok that could be part of the problem. I've had this vehicle for two weeks. The knob on the lever is marked 4L nearest the dash and 4h nearest the seat. I'm guessing it's a replacement knob.

Hrm that's interesting. Assuming it's 01 you have TOD that means the transfer case has 2 positions. Down and Up. Down is HIGH (both 4 and 2) and Up (4L only)

HIGH = TOD when the dash switch is activated.
4L defeats the TOD and puts the transfer case gears into mechanical engagement. no PWM clutching.

I think the OP's vehicle is working normally, he just needs to assure that all the controls are in the appropriate fully engaged positions.
