2002 Rodeo Won't Go

Postby rodeo64 » Thu May 18, 2017 6:55 am

New to Rodeos and site. Recently bought a 2002 Rodeo with 3.2L and 2WD and 195,000 miles. Vehicle was running great. Two 100 plus mile trips on interstate. Recently around town, it started to overheat. Pulled over to let cool, parked for two hours, and drove home carefully. Next day, it started and idled fine but would not go over about 20 to 30 mph. More pedal just made it bog down. Happens in park if you rev it; will not go over about 2000 rpm. Any ideas?

Is the "Reduced Power" lamp illuminated?

No. It is not. I have not pushed it because sounds so bad.

I got this vehicle for a great deal and have put a few thousand in it (tires, front end work, shocks, etc.); nothing major. I plan for my son to drive it to college next year. I have a Haynes manual and I am pretty handy troubleshooting and fixing easy to moderate issues.

My last resort is to take it to the local Honda dealer to diagnose and maybe repair. Would much rather fix it here using your input and knowledge.

Is the Check Engine Lamp (CEL) illuminated?
Do you own a scan tool?
Do you own a compression gauge?

CEL is on. Local parts store shot the codes and it came up obstruction. I do not own any of the mentioned tools or gauges except a fuel pressure gauge. Where is the catalytic converter on this vehicle? Could it be obstructed? What can be done to fix it?

The CEL is illuminated because the PCM has detected one or more engine related problems that most likely would provide some idea of what the failure actually is. You need to post the DTC numbers you got from the auto parts store or invest in a scan tool that you can use for troubleshooting. I can help you troubleshoot your truck but I need a starting point.

Shot the codes; catalytic converter obstruction indicated. Replaced both and now it runs perfectly!
