Transmission problems - 1991 trooper XS 2.8

Postby jgreenhouse » Tue May 09, 2017 9:01 pm

Hey All,
Recently purchased a gen1 1991 trooper XS. Love everything about it. Had one growing up and now i cant wait to start the mods.
I plan on throwing on a 1.5-2" lift with 32" all terrain tires. Also, would like to install a low profile roof rack and lights.
Before i can do that i need to resolve some issues with the cars shifting. Its an automatic and when it gets to operating temperature it seems to fall out of gear at stop lights. It feels like when im stopped at a light and my foot is on the break it goes into neutral. If im on a incline and let off the break i will roll without stopping. As i try to accelerate when the light turns green the car doesnt go anywhere and then eventually, with enough gas, jolts forward into gear as if i let the clutch out to fast (if it were a manual).
Any ideas what could be going on ?

Thanks,
Jake

Which engine do you have. I believe the transmissions are different between the 2.6 and 2.8 engines.
1990 Amigo, 2.3 5 speed (sold)
1991 Pick up (long gone)
2000 Amigo, 2.2 5 speed(sold)
1985 Trooper 1.9 4 speed (sent back to KS)
1989 Trooper RS 2.6 5 spd. Red

We get too soon old and too late smart!

Pretty sure that's the 4L30E Transmission. Buster28 is our forum expert on this tranny, but probably won't see this post till you change the headline or repost as tranny trouble.

When your at the stoplight can you accelerate normally if you shift into L (Manual 1st)?
Is there any delay or slipping in Reverse?

Unfortunately no. In L the problem still persists.
In Reverse there is absolutely no issue at all.

Slipping in L (Manual 1st) or Drive 1st but not in Reverse indicates the reaction drum brake band is slipping. It is probably worn out but you may be able to squeeze some more life out if it with an adjustment.
