Old Member, but New 'Zu (to me)

Postby JoeIsuzu » Fri Nov 08, 2013 12:53 am

Just picked up a '94 Amigo today from some guy in Dacula, GA that we all know. :) My diesel P'up is currently in rehab, and I've always liked the 1st-gen Amigos. So I bought the Amigo, and it's now in my driveway.

Driving it home was a little exciting. I found out that it's possible to stop all three lanes of westbound traffic on I-20 coming out of Atlanta, and even get applause from other drivers. More on that later. :(

Pictures to follow.

So the left rear tire BLEW out at in the left-most lane, at about 75 mph in typical Atlanta-area traffic. Here's a photo of where the Amigo came to rest. I got it out of the driving lanes before taking this photo, but the hook-shaped gouge in the shoulder is from my left rear rim, from when it finally swapped ends right before coming to a stop in the inside lane. Those weren't the only skidmarks!

And here's the Amigo. I decided not to change the tire here. I waited about 15 minutes for a break in traffic, and limped over to the exit and got completely off the road.

Yep. My legs were a little wobbly. When it finally came back down on all 3.5 tires, I was looking eye-to-eye with a guy in a Silverado. He gave me two thumbs up, applauded, and hollered "You did a good job!" All 3 lanes waited while I got out and checked to see if I had all 4 wheels still on the truck, then I got back in and pulled it onto the shoulder.

That's scary. Reminds me of the time I was towing a car trailer in heavy Chicago traffic in the cold sleet and the trailer bounded off the hitch. Luckily, those little safety chains held true but it was QUITE a close call as the trailer went swinging into the other lanes and came to a stop on the shoulder.

Glad you are OK, and a good reminder to watch the tread on your tires.

Thanks. Yes, it's in my driveway now. I'll be tire-shopping next week.

I won't lie, I'm starting to like this little guy. I ordered a cheap stereo today, since I bought it without one installed. I spent a whopping $72.12 (including shipping). I'll post up the details once it's installed.

The head unit is a cheapie, but it's got bluetooth, USB, and takes memory cards--just not discs. I installed it, but I don't like it in the factory location. I may swap it out with the heater controls. It's only half-depth, since it has no CD/DVD. I'll post photos when it's in its final location. Here's the unit:

On another note, it's been raining the last couple of days. I am completely blown away by the difference having a limited-slip rear end makes. My P'up would easily spin on takeoffs and turns, but the Amigo stays locked in. Thanks to Jerry and Dan for the LSD!

By the way, I've had this Amigo less than a month, and probably three people have asked me if I'd sell it to them. When my P'up is out of rehab, I just might keep the Amigo. But if not, it looks like it shouldn't be hard to sell. :)

What are you having done to your pup? Is it a cosmetic rehab or mechanical?

So far, mechanical. The engine is being overhauled, I'm having an '86 crankcase ventilation system added, etc. etc.

Once that's done, I need to find someone who will do a good job with some body work and paint. Then the interior...then maybe good for another 30 years.

Sounds good! How many miles do you have on your pup these days? Was the engine getting tired or is it just a preventative overhaul?

It was running well, but had erratic oil consumption. I was never able to pinpoint the reason why.

Gotta love buying old vehicles. I had bought an 89 cherokee 3hrs away from my house, blew a transmission seal and clogged the highway with a thick plume of opaque white smoke. Where she went down was a dry county. Couldn't even get a beer while I waited for a tow truck.

I didn't buy that one old at all. In fact, who said it's old?! It's still my new truck!

Right, new to you. I wouldn't necessarily consider a 94 a new truck though.

Update: I sold this Amigo to my oldest son in 2014 (?). It has been his daily driver until yesterday. He sold it to my younger son yesterday, so it's still in the family. Maybe someday it will come back to me. ;)

I just noticed, I never got around to posting pictures of this Amigo. I'll have to do that.
