This is Squatch's hall of fame article on timing the 2.6. Read through it in it's entirety. It's spot on.

That thread mostly discusses cam timing. According to Jerry, you don't disconnect anything. You just connect your timing light to the #4 spark plug lead and set timing at 6 BTDC at 800 rpm. However, you need to make sure your timing mark on the damper didn't slip. I personally, rarely use a timing light. I advance the distributor a little bit and take it for a test drive up a long steep hill I have nearby. I keep advancing until I get pinging or and then back it off a hair.

Yes, #1 and #4 are a TDC at the same time, but the TDC mark on the balancer is for #4 compression stroke.

For anybody's future reference, the crankshaft's harmonic balancer mark (if accurate) can be for either #1 or #4 compression stroke. Only the CAM timing mark is specific to the #4 compression stroke, and it is used only for cam - crank timing. You can time off either # 1 or #4, just depends which wire you clip the sensor to.
