Swapping a 3.1l into a 1986 trooper ii

Postby casroger » Sat Apr 01, 2017 4:42 pm

I have currently pulled my 2.2l diesel out and it is completely worn out. Just trying to find if someone has put the 3.1l diesel in one of these before. I have done a lot of searching but can't find anyone that has done it in this year. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks

If the new engine has a matching tranny it's larger than your current tranny so the tranny tunnel would need enlarged to fit. If it's a manual tranny it probably has a hydraulic clutch. Plan on a new tranny crossmember & I think fabbed motor mounts. Other than that it should be about the same as a swap into any Trooper through '91, not that much difference '86-'91. See if you can find swap info for one of those years.

Does your '86 have a removeable tranny crossmember? Much easier job if it does. Royal pain if it doesn't, from what I hear.

You will need to do a body lift to fit the 3.1 or 2.8 in there. There was a 2.8 swap on the isuzupup website from a few years back. Either should bolt in, and like was mentioned you will have to put in a hydraulic clutch to accommodate newer trans. Usually swap comes with the slave cylinder, you will have to drill a hole in your firewall to install a master clutch cylinder and install appropriate pedal as well.

I have one in pieces that i would sell, :) I also have a good quality rebuild kit for it. I have imported them in the past, they are scarce to come by though. And ordering just one motor is usually not economically sensible due to shipping and import taxes etc. The ones that pop up are the oddball in a large lot that an engine importer has received in a container full of motors. There are new ones available as well, about $4k last I saw. Do you want a manual or automatic? I can find a 3.1 for you alot easier...

I think it would be fun, its got a bit more displacement than what you have now that is for sure. Fuel economy would depend on how you drove it but would not be any worse than 25 mpg, probably low 30's on average- again depends on that R foot. Wiring is a little different as the gauge clusters are a departure from each other- first and second gen troopers i mean. The 2.8 was in the 1st gen and by the time the 3.1 came around it was for the heavier, more refined? trooper models. Indirect injection so it is quieter which is nice in an older car. Not to say you will not hear it, especially if you modify your exhaust- which you will have to do since it runs down the opposite side of your truck than your old exhaust does. A 2.75" straight pipe will help it breath and should just fit. Is your 86 a 2 or 4 door model? I honestly have not seen a write up with a 3.1 in a first gen yet...
