Hex nut

Postby outofrshell » Thu Jan 29, 2015 1:20 am

I have had an issue with my 1989 V6 Trooper since I've owned it that the exhaust down pipes keep coming loose. From days of yore I remember the nuts on the manifold bolts were brass so with that in mind I first thought of buying them but being cheap and retired I decided I could make them. The first set of 4 were done with just an angle gauge and were not flanged but it appears that it is working the nuts are staying tight. With the idea of an index from a friend I built a jig using a 7/8" socket and a slotted plate, this worked so well that I made a new set of flanged nuts. Dave

That is amazing! Perfect. You could sell these.

I love seeing people create things instead of just buying them.

Thats very impressive! I've started using copper or brass nuts on my VW engines after having a bunch of them come loose on me. I found a place that will sell the M8x1.25 copper nuts for 14 cents each, so I loaded up! I'm impressed with you skills though! That is crazy awesome!

Dave,
If you get bored again and decide to make these nuts again, I would be more than happy to buy a set from you. I am having the same problem with my downpipes. I got the 3.4 installed in my Trooper and I am very happy with it. What injectors are you running in yours? I currently have the 2.8 but I have a new set of the 4.3 around here somewhere.

Hex yes I'd be glad to make you a set and also I think I found a gasket that will last and does a fair job of sealing. I used .250 thick copper plate to make a ring 2" ID X 2.5" OD this is doing well so far. If you ever see a piece of copper plate at your work I'll trade you for a set of finished gaskets.
I am using 2.8 injectors and a 91 Rodeo ECM and it runs very well. Another thing is watch your motor mounts I have already had to replace the left one we changed in Nevada my theory is the the mounts are not designed for the extra HP these engines are putting out. I have added a short chain from block to frame to stop the torque lift on the left side. Dave

Sounds like a deal, while I may not have a plate so to speak we get big thick gears all of the time. They can be up to 1 inch thick. Bet you could make something from those. I will get a picture or two of the box and let you see what I am talking about. I will watch the motor mounts. I haven't done anything but putt around right now. Lots of plans in the works. And just this week I found a manifolded air compressor tank that will fit right up like yours. Hex yes..... now that was funny!

Another method is to attach the pipes with bolts and safety wire the. The big problem with the Exhaust is the crappy gasket. S-10's used the doghnut style seal and it is far superior and flexible. I wish Isuzu had done the same.

As for those 3.4's. Don't run them on 2.8L injectors with the 2.8L computer. You will run it lean and it's very hard on it.

On the engine mounts. Be sure the heat shields are on the mounts. They are there to prevent the rubber from softening and flexing too much. Only OEM ones are worth using. The ones sold on Rock Auto are complete junk. With a bit of fab work universal Jeep mounts from Energy Suspension can be used.

Off the road for an overhaul right now.

I have finally found the fix for the exhaust. Using the brass nuts helped but the gasket was still a problem, I made a gasket from soft copper 5/16" thick 2" ID - 2.5 OD, flat on the bottom - beveled on top to match the manifold seals tight and nothing to burn out.
I am running 2.8 injectors with a 3.1 Rodeo ECM, any thing else I have tried causes issues right now the Trooper is running great
The motor mounts I have been using are NAPA, but the listing is for the 2.6, parts house don't show a left V6 Motor Mount. I suppose the OEM would be better but I think a limiting cable or chain will help make any of them last longer.

I would be interested in those rings if you can still make em. I was thinking or making something at work or taking the pipe to the parts store and finding a better gasket.
