Make sure it has oil in the compressor. Drain condensation from the tank.

I'm thinking about changing the oil in the compressor. Is that a good idea ?

It's certainly not a bad one. It should be changed occasionally, but I don't remember what the schedule is. I should probably get the manual out for my compressor...

The compressor is just like a gas engine, lots of air goes through it so keep the air filter clean. Most compressors do not have adequate filters in my estimation.

Yeah I was thinking that the filter could use updating. Its not dirty but it doesnt seem like it would keep all the dirt and debris out

Older compressors scare me anymore after Squatch posted a video of one grenading. Not saying I'd never buy one but if I did I'd have a real temptation to tap along the bottom of it, especially around the drain if it's the lowest point. Sure, you might tap a hole in it but better that then to have the thing literally blow up on you unexpectedly if the tank were rusted thin from not draining it.

That looks like a Speedaire too so parts will be easy to find. I "restored" one I got for almost nothing. It needed some new reed valves and an air filter. Changing the oil is easy, and even HF carries air compressor oil.

There were intake mufflers for those. I found one after a month or two of watching ebay. They may be more or less available now, but it's worth looking.

Here is someone's home built intake adapter:

http://photos.phpwerx.net/dan/2010-12-0 ... CF3837.JPG

There are lots of intake mufflers out there. I bought a craftsman. It's like a small air filter housing but it has a set of tubes so there is no direct path for sound to exit.

A happy New Year to all!

As a matter of routine, one should open the condensation drain on the bottom of the tank at the end of each days use! It only takes a minute to do and will insure all that accumulated moisture is blown out. Your tank should enjoy a bit more longevity with this procedure. If you forget to close that valve on start-up, the extra noise of escaping air will remind you!

A yearly change of compressor lubricant should be plenty in most cases! Make sure you have moisture traps in place if using to spray paint.

Cheers,

If you use the compressor a lot, you might benefit from an auto-drain setup. The one that Harbor Freight sells isn't very good, but there are other options. I have found their blue garage hose kit to be good, as are the large-ish oilers, filters and regulators.
