1988 and 1989 Isuzu Troopers for sale IL

Postby 794613 » Wed Oct 26, 2016 3:38 pm

I've got a 1988 and 1989 Isuzu Trooper for sale. The 1988 I bought with the intentions of fixing it. It has 73,000 miles on it and I bought it from a guy who has had it in storage since 1998. I drained and rinsed the fuel tank and put in a new fuel pump/filter/plugs/wires and distributor. We got it to fire, but it looks like it has low compression on cylinder 3 according to my mechanic. I've also got a 1989 that has been in our family since new. It's rough, but surprisingly keeps on running. It has somewhere around 217,000 miles and is very rusty. I'd like to find homes for both of them. They both have clear titles and I'd like to sell them as a package deal. I'd like $1000 or best offer for the pair as they sit now. Please contact me at [email protected] if you're interested. Thank you!

Pictures all the way around both Troopers would be a good idea. Pictures from both interiors
would help a lot for any one looking to possibly buy these from you. Just an idea. 8)

Thanks for the suggestion. I figured at the price I'm asking, these would suffice. I'm surprised that no one wants them. I work near a salvage yard with a crusher, hate to do it, but it may have to be done. I'm still driving the blue one, otherwise I'd sell them independently.

Please don't! There are several here who are interested, but it's an 11-hour drive, one-way, for me. If you ultimately decide to take them to salvage, at least give us the chance to buy parts from you, especially headlight assemblies! Your price is good, just be patient, PLEASE!

EDIT: I noticed the '88 is an LS model...does it have manual windows, or electric?

Thank you for your comment kg4miq. I love these trucks and that is why I bought the 88. I had hopes to fix it up (since it only has 73k miles) and drive it but I haven't gotten to it in a reasonable amount of time. The 89 has been in our family since new, and I've owned it since 2004. The only reason I'm selling them as a pair as it will force me to go out and buy a new vehicle, I've limped the trooper along for years and would probably continue to do so otherwise. Luckily I have a 3 mile commute, I think that is why it hasn't given up on me yet :). I will definitely be patient, but every winter I get a little nervous about continuing to drive the blue one.

The 88 has crank windows, the 89 has electric windows/doors (the blue one that I still drive).

On a side note, does anyone sell all new brake lines for these trucks by chance (Paging Jlemond!). My original plan was to swap the motor from the 89 into the 88, but the brakes need quite a bit of attention. I had a shop quote me a ridiculous price to replace the brake lines so that is why I'm leaning toward letting them both go.

Most of the work can be done fairly easily by yourself with basic tools and knowledge. There are TONS of helpful threads on this forum (see the Hall of Fame section) about everything related to these vehicles. I know I wouldn't be as heavily into them or as knowledgeable about automotive mechanics in general, nor as confident working on them, had it not been for this forum and a few videos.

As for the brake lines, those are still available from most parts stores. I think Jerry still carries OEM replacements for that kind of stuff, too.

I'm assuming these are four cylinder engines and automatic transmissions, since I see manual hubs. Why would you replace the engine with 73k miles with one that has over 200k? Those engines are normally good for a lot more mileage (nearly 300k in most instances, with normal upkeep, before having them rebuilt). The low compression on one cylinder sounds like a simple head gasket replacement. That's an easy job for a Saturday, with a little bit of help from youtube, assuming the head isn't cracked.

Postby 794613 » Thu Nov 17, 2016 11:14 am

I've been working on the blue one (to keep it running) since 04. I've done two headgasket jobs on it. Jerry Lemond has always supplied the parts. The 89 has a replacement motor out of an isuzu pup, did that around 04. I did think about buying a clearwater head for around $550 to get the 88 going, but it's sat since 98. The brake lines are shot on it along with the calipers I'm sure. I'm just not sure if I want to dump $2k into the 88. I know they are getting a little rarer, but I've seen some really nice troopers for sale for around $4k that don't require the time invested. Just feeling a little overwhelmed sometimes, ya know? I've only gotten as far as cleaning out the 88's fuel tank and putting a new fuel pump in (along with the basics like cap/rotor/plugs/wires). I'm just not sure how much time I have to devote to brake lines, fuel lines, etc. If I had a reasonable mechanic around, it'd make that choice a lot easier :).

I can certainly relate to the feeling of being overwhelmed - you've seen my signature, by chance? That's not all I have going. Add five more vehicles which are not on that list of current projects (those are just mine). This is along with a normal job every day, thirty miles from home, plus military commitments, four children, etc., and you get the picture.

The thing about these old Troopers is most of us are very passionate about them. We love them dearly, and part of the enjoyment and fulfillment is the satisfaction of that little four cylinder or V6 roaring to life the first time after you've done some work on it. I know the frustration that comes with troubleshooting and lying on your back in all sorts of grit and grime and goo and weather, only to have it cough and sputter, rather than be rewarded for the effort you've put into it. I have never come across a more devoted community, working together to help one another keep these things rolling.

When I read through Ken's saga of getting his Trooper running, after having bought it with its engine sitting in the backend of the vehicle, and dealing with physical pain on a daily basis, only to eventually succumb to his body's frailty, along with all of the great support he got from everyone on this forum during the process, I'm reminded of just how powerful this community is.

Ken Weaver's basket-case '86 Trooper

I'm getting sentimental here. Sorry about that, but I hate to see even one of these in relatively good condition be relegated to the trash heap or salvage yard.

I will be getting rid of these two troopers one way or another. If you are interested, please let me know asap. I'm flexible on the price within reason.

Thank you

The 88 is not "rust free", but it's low mileage. That is the 88 that someone may be coming to look at. Are you local to the area that I'm in?

My 88 frame and chassis are perfect. The body on the other hand is rusted through and large pieces rusted away. I'm in Ohio but if body is good enough I would make the drive

Mpallens, here are a few more photos (including the two posted originally). I really would prefer to sell the two as a package deal. My original plan was to take the running 89 and use it for parts to get the 88 going.

No, I've already been asked to part them out, but I'm not going to do that. Both trucks are complete and that is how they will remain. Thanks though.

The calipers may be good they are not simple clamp to open they require turning, I figured this out after breaking a C clamp LOL. Also Clearwater will give you the head for 350.00. I did that couple years ago. I am in IL and you beat me to the punch on the 1988 when it was for sale in the guys garage back in 2014. I bought another one and put a Clearwater head on it, after having the original rebuilt and learning it was cracked. Just some FYI... good luck.
