Greetings & salutations!

I've long ago lost track of how long it's been since I was last able to login and post a message here at the Planet. It's great to be back! Some nasty, tenacious virus took up residence in my laptop, ages ago, and I haven't been able to use a BBS-type forum page since. The death nail occurred a few weeks ago, after running nearly continuously for almost 10 years, when the hard drive finally gave up its ghost forever... this; followed closely by a similar fate, via entropy, that rendered my Paleolithic Era flip-phone virtually useless, finally motivated me to get behind the wheel of a smartphone. Two birds / one stone, I guess.

Anyway, here's my first question: How the hell have all of you been reading and posting to the forum, on a cellular phone, all of these years??!! This can't be more than a 2 point font! Forget reading glasses; I'm gonna need a Jeweler's eyepiece! :-p

In other news: The Trooper is fairing slightly better than the aforementioned electronic devices (if only just), so I suppose there is a chance that I might be able to make it down this year (albeit a slight one), so I have put myself down as a maybe.

Hope to see you all there! (Fingers crossed)

Smart phones come with different size screens. A large screen and reading glasses seem to work when I use landscape orientation.

The learning curve is steep, but just a moment ago I accidentally discovered how to zoom-in... I'm getting there.

Postby lorenzo816 » Wed Mar 15, 2017 2:13 pm

okay a fat maybe if the schedule works out.
all I need is a tent spot. So as usual, I'm going to beg either Van or Shaggy for 9 sq feet of space. :drunken:

hope Paul gets his junk working.
And I hope to catch Eric before the Uwharrie run to swap his gears.
Or I have a CRAZY idea... similar to Jerry Lemond doing a timing belt in the woods a few years back....
what if we put on a 'how-to' session?
If we don't get egagnon086's gears swapped before Uwharrie, I can do it there in the woods.
Anyone want to watch: free.
Anyone want to give advice other than Jerry, $10

Lol, A gear swap at Uwharrie, would be pretty epic.

I may just do it too if anyone can bring a transmission jack, I'm still trying to get ahold of one to get this trans out before then.

I seem to recall many moons ago, during one of my first outings to Uwharrie, a crazy Russian pulling and reinstalling a transmission (to fix a bad clutch or rear main seal??) in the middle of the night without the luxury of a transmission jack... and it wasn't even his vehicle! But it was in the campground and not out on the trail, so I suppose it wasn't that impressive. LOL!

I've heard stories of this mythical man named 'Rubo" with a thick russian/slavic accent that only Joe, joe Berry, and Smilie perhaps Bansil will recall.
Campfire stories for sure.

Leland, That's still impressive. Probably as impressive as our magical 3 way lugnut swap.... wait a minute. That doesn't mean what you think it means.
LOLOL

anyhow
I think i've taken the cake on epic jobs at the campground.
The never-ending lets swap CV axles job that took two days because we got the wrong length shaft on one and then got it together only to realize I broke both sides.
FML that was so much fun.
IIRC Cronk was there too.
Think he rolled his white rodeofrontera that trip into the mud pit. I might be fuzzy on that one.

Eric, would be great to get you up there a day early if we actually have to do it at the campground and can't do in GA before then.
I can take time off and i'm only 50 minutes away.
Let me know.

My junk should be ready, and depending on how things go the next few weeks, I'll decide whether it'll be a day trip vs reserving a site. If I get a site, Lorenzo, you're welcome to set up there as well.

I believe I met Rubo at one of the old Uwharrie trips 10-12 years ago. I don't ever remember pulling up to camp in those days without seeing someone under their rig with parts and tools everywhere  Met a lot of folks for the first time with a greasy handshake back then.

That mythical creature with the thick Russian/Armenian accent, known as Rubo, is now living in California. Prior to that, he lived on my sofa for nine months... but I will have to Regale you with those Tales some other time. :P

Rubo did indeed replace a transmission seal on a Toyota 4Runner, in the campground, working tirelessly for two days and nights -- for a complete stranger no less; a young college student on his very first trip to Uwharrie. Afterward, the guy had his girlfriend drive in from Charlotte in order to bring a bottle of Grey Goose vodka to show his appreciation. Best as we could figure, the labor cost worked out to be roughly a 1/2 shot per hour.

Ahhhh, the good old days! :drunken:

Are you kidding? It is not even April yet and you are looking at the forecast. What do you think they used to make the prediction, a caterpillar, a groundhog or a dart board?

I use sophisticated algorithms that contains various atmospheric indicators and triple cell climatological models. ENSO, PDO and NAO - and where it is in the yearly cycle and where the regional indicators are forecast to be 15 to 30 days out is also thrown into the mix. In addition, if you take in to account regional - specifically local climatology along with moon phase, solar activity you can come to an excellent conclusion. If you like I can teach a class this year on the subject. :albino:
