Flintlock Shooting Range is now OPEN!

Postby Hack » Fri Aug 16, 2013 11:02 am

The NRA has been working to reopen the Flintlock Range at URE. http://www.nraila.org/legislation/feder ... t-3rd.aspx

Apparently the meeting went very well. Here is a link to a thread on the Carolina Shooting Club. Hopefully the info is correct.

Yes it will be reopened but there will be changes. You will only be able to shoot when there is someone on duty which will be like 9 to 5 so no more sun up to sun down. Also I haven't heard if those guys will be there on the weekends I assume so because you would lose lots of people if they couldn't shoot on weekends.

Yipee! At least it is progress, means next spring, the fam can go shooting on wed or thur before the big group arrives. I can't see it being too busy on a weekday! Now if I can get my hands on some 22 at a reasonable cost. Ammo is on the shelves again, I picked up a case of 38sp, .40 and 223 in Ohio at a Gander Mountain store, but ZERO 22LR except useless shotshell. A bit pricey, but the fact that the shelves were stocked was a surprise to me. Va shelves are still empty, at least in the Hampton Roads area. I don't know if it is because we have a high military population or what, but we have nothing excpet 30-06, 17HMR, and a few other oddball rounds. Local gun shop sometimes has various handgun calibers, but they will sell only if you purchase a firearm, and limited to one box. Boo!!!

Try these bots.

They helped me find a 325 round brick of Federal for $22 but that offer is gone. Just keep trying.

Update on the range with pics. It definitely will reopen. The big question is will it be open in time for the Spring run.

Thanks, Don. It is getting there. Hopefully, it will be open in a few weeks just in time for the Spring run.

Thanks for that link Don. Looks like they are indeed making it a range to be proud of. Should be a very nice facility when it's done.

I know you get a kick out of it but wondered if that revolver gives a physical kick? I don't know if I will buy any .22's it seems like such a rip off.

The revolver has an 8" steel barrel so it really deadens the kick. I have 2 cylinders for the revolver.

I prefer to use the cap and ball cylinder. The recommended powder charge is 25-30 grains. My flask measures out 25 grains by volume, so that is what I use with a .454" 141 grain lead ball. Despite the flash and smoke :D , this results in absolutely no kick. Some members of my 1858 Remington forum have used charges as high as 35-40 grains by volume. They say you can feel that charge and that accuracy suffers.

I cannot use the cap and ball cylinder indoors as most indoor ranges prohibit black powder. So indoors I use a .45 long colt conversion cylinder which requires unjacketed lead bullets. Using the recommended "cowboy loads" (200 grain at 730 fps), I do not feel a thing. I do feel some kick if I use a standard load of 240 grain at 850 fps, but it is not bad.

The revolver with starter kit goes for around $220 on sale at Cabelas and can be shipped to your house as it doesn't require paperwork. 100 round balls go for about $10 ($0.10 per round). 100 caps for around $6 ($0.06 per round). 1lbs of Pydrodex P a black powder substitute (my local Bass Pro does not carry black powder and it is expensive to ship BP as it is classified as an explosive) goes for about $25 and is enough for about 250 charges (about $0.10 per round). I also use a dab of lube for each round, which I make from Crisco and bees wax. So it costs me about $0.27 per round to fire cap and ball. Some are spending nearly that much on .22 lr rounds in these days of inflated ammo prices.

A conversion cylinder goes for around $240 (yes, more than the revolver), but it too can be shipped to your house since it does not require paperwork. A box of 50 rounds of .45 long colts costs around $30 ($0.60 per round).

So you can see the attraction of cap and ball.

Ha ha ha makes me think of a friend, first time he shot his .44 magnum it kicked him between the eyes. We were shooting my deputy grandsons .40 and .45 semi but the trigger pull is so much different than a revolver in single action it would take me forever to get used to it.

Sounds like the first time I shoot Squatch's Ruger Super Blackhawk. It was a bit hard getting used to the single action, not that it kicked with that 10" barrel.
