89 TROOPER COLLIDING WITH 79 LANDCRUISER

Postby steve_gicas » Sun Aug 10, 2014 3:57 pm

BEEN WORKING AN THIS RIG FOR AWHILE NOW, I ORIGINALLY PUT A TOYOTA SOLID AXLE AND A 22RE WITH W56 TRANS AND TCASE. WAS AWESOME, AND I HAD LOADS OF FUN WITH IT..... BUT IT WAS LACKING IN SOME AREAS. PAY LOAD WAS NILL, THE STOCK TROOPER FRAME DIDNT ALLOW FOR MUCH UP TRAVLE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION WITH OUT LIFTING IT A BUNCH MORE, AND FUEL ECONOMY AND RANGE WASNT ALL THAT GREAT.

SO I STARTED TO CHOP
Image

THEN I GOT SOME AXLES
[img][/img]

DID A CUT AND TURN ON THE FRONT AXLE AND CENTERED THE REAR WITH MINI TRUCK OUTERS
Image
Image

BUILT A FRAME AND HUNG SUSPENSION
Image

Image

BUILT AN ADAPTER PLATE TO MOUNT A 5SPD TO THE DIESEL , AND NOW IM WORKING ON THE MOUNTS. HOPEFULLY I CAN GET THE BODY ON IN THE NEXT WEEK
Image
Image
Image
Image

SPECS SO FAR ARE
TOYOTA 2.9L B DIESEL WITH R151F 5SPD GEAR DRIVEN T-CASE WITH 4.7 LOW GEAR (MOCK UP MOTOR IS A 3.4L 3B THAT WILL GET A FULL OVERHALL WITH TURBO)
TOYOTA FJ40 DIFFS REAR IS CENTERED WITH MINI TRUCK OUTERS WITH FRONT HUBS TO MAKE FULL FLOATER, WITH ISUZU REAR CALIPERS..GONNA GET SOME 4.88S WITH ARB WHEN $$ ALLOWS
GOOD YEAR 33X12.5R15
91 4RUNNER IFS STEERING BOX, GOT A GM STEERING COLUMN OUT OF A 79 TRANS AM FLOOR SHIFT CAR.
PLAN ON GETTING A AMERICAN AUTO WIRE WIRING HARNESS
GM HYDRO BOOST BRAKE BOOSTER.

NO THAT THE DRIVE LINE IS 90% COMPLETE I CAN SET THE BODY ON AND SEE WHAT IM GONNA HAVE TO CHOP OUT OF THE FLOOR

Neat project. There were a couple of minutes where we were really close to lopping off the front of my frame due to the uptravel problem.

Just out of curiosity, why leaf springs in the rear with the 3-link panhard up front? Would a four link in the back with a sway bar, be a more balanced match?

Either way, nice work so far. Cool stuff. Bradzipple here on the planet keeps threatening to link my Trooper.

Thanx guys, it has been a lot of work.. But it's a labour of love...

Well the body bolts on... So technically it's a bolt on mod for a trooper... Haha

I went with leafs in the rear for pay load capacity. It will be an expo rig in the end, so with 2 spare tires, extra fuel, recovery gear ect it will get heavy.... Mans I had plan to reuse my old leafs but they turned out to be broken.... And as for the B diesel, where I am there are lots around, it's a bullet proof motor.. And in the next 4 Years I plan to drive to South America and hopfully ship it to Africa, and that motor is everywhere in Africa.. In the end I'll be running a 3B with a turbo

GOT A LITTLE MORE DONE ON THE TROOPER LAST WEEK.. BODY IS SITTING ON THE FRAME, GRABBED SOME 37" TIRES FOR MOCK UP AND HAVE BEEN PLAYING WITH WHEEL OPENINGS. I THINK IM GOING TO STRETCH THE OPENING AND KEEP THE STOCK BODY LINE. ALL SO GOT THE INSIDE GUTTED AND STEERING COLUMN AND BRAKE BOOSTER MOCKED IN PLACE.

Image
GOT IT OFF THE OLD FRAME

Image
MAKES THE 33s LOOK TINY

Image
FLOOR CUT OUT FOR THE TRANS AND TCASE

Image
GM STEERING COLUMN ZAP STRAPPED IN PLACE.... I HAD TO PUT IT IN SO I COULD SIT BEHIND THE WHEEL AGAIN AND SHIFT SOME GEARS... LOL

Image
HYDRO BOOST WITH TROOPER PATTERN AND I JUST THREADED THE ROD TO ACCEPT THE TROOPER CLEAVES... ITS A "BOLT IN" MOD
Image

Image
FRONT END SITTING ON WITH THE 37s ( ACTUALLY 39.5 BUT THEY MEASURE A C-HAIR OVER 37)

NEXT UP IS BODY MOUNTS AND DRIVE LINE. IM THINKING OF CUTTING THE ROCKERS OFF AND REPLACING THEM WITH SOME 5X2 REG TUBING LIKE SLIDERS AND DOING MILD BOAT SIDE KINDA DEAL. THEN THERE WILL BE SOME 1X2 REG TUBING FOLLOWING THE FENDER LINE FOR RUB RAILS THAT WILL TIE INTO THE BUMPERS AND SLIDERS.

Looking good. Stoked to finally see some wheeling related body work on one of these. Rub-rails on the fenders and boatsides? Yes, please!

My advice: figure out a way to protect your d-pillar too. Maybe it is just me, but I can't keep that stoopid thing outta trouble.

Is that ride height? What's the belly height? It looks pretty tall, but it might be the pics...

yes thats ride height in the front, rear should come down about 2-3in. at ride the belly is 25" and the bottom of the rockers will be 28.5-29 with the little bit of boat side. ya i wanna do a full low pro exo cage.. kinda incorporate a roof rack and rear ladders into it. im trying to find myself a mitsubishi delica with the crystal roof and transplant that roof on to the trooper, i think that woud be super sweet.. the measurement from drip rail to drip rail is the same for both vehicles so it would be relatively easy.

Digging the body work. I want to see how you get the interior cargo area finished and whatever issues you run into (if any). I'm planning to do some work in the cargo area and I'm wondering if it's any sort of special pain in the ---.

I like how you enlarged it by moving the openings instead of just hacking them out. It doesnt look too complicated either. Very nice!

another small update... been playing with the rear end, got my adapters made up to bolt front toyota spindles and hubs with solid brake rotors on to the stock toy wheel bearing flange.
Image
Image
so with some custom 30 spline shafts and drive flanges i will have a full float rear axle
Image
im using 83 toyota pick up front spindles, hubs and rotors along with the stock isuzu trooper rear calipers. i torched out a 1/2" think bracket to mount the caliper and welded her up..

also scored this sweet gas filler from one of my customers.... most expensive gas cap on an isuzu trooper ever... lol

What master cylinder did you end up using? I am switching to Hydroboost and thinking of using a mid 90's 1 ton master cylinder. They are 1.25" bore. In the early 2000's they got even bigger and were 1.375" Both have the outlets on the wrong side but I think I will use AN lines to jump from the master to the proportioning valve.

I ordered a wilwood Product Number: 261-13269-P With a 1" bore... Stock is 3/4 bore i believe, wich was plenty with the big toyota 4 piston brakes up front.. So I figure 1" will give me even harder of a pedal

The stock Isuzu one is 1". I saw some of the aftermarket ones but I would prefer something more common so it is easy to rebuild or replace.

As an ex owner of a 3B powered BJ60, good motor choice. With the right sized turbo, plenty of power is there.

Also, restoration on a MKIII Sprite/ MKII Midget?
