Re: How to time the 4ze1 2.6 4 cylinder engine.

Postby tdr264 » Thu Nov 12, 2015 7:29 pm

I do believe I have managed to get the timing right BUT the engine begins to stall after a minute or so at 2000 rpms and loses power under load. Replaced injs., m.a.f. and several other parts. Map sensor was not in place when I got the truck three years ago with the old engine in place and it ran just fine. I would replace it if I knew it would help and if knew the wiring for said sensor. I can't find any, open or otherwise, plug that would fit the m.a.p. that goes with this truck. Any advise would be appreciated. It has been quite an experience trying to learn these 4ze1's. I hope I can get it right!

Re: How to time the 4ze1 2.6 4 cylinder engine: TIMING MARKS

Postby PhilD » Sat Nov 14, 2015 10:57 pm

Regarding the timing mark on the harmonic balancer: it is supposed to be lined up directly with the keyway. With this in mind, you can re-mark the harmonic balancer (if necessary) when you need to check the ignition timing.

Thank you Squatch,Bradzuzu and T89
I was able to get my timing set after a head change due to this hall of fame post.

I to was having a major problem getting my timing marks lined up. Poster T89 was having the same problem with one of the marks being a half tooth off. Of course I read the post after I already put everything back together with the crank half tooth off and the cam mark dead on. When she would only come close to getting started by rotating distributer counter clockwise. I knew right away it was a timing issue.

Second time around I set the crank mark dead nuts on and the cam mark was half a tooth clockwise past the cam mark. To compensate for the cam mark being off I had to pull the distributer and retard (clockwise turn) one gear tooth to get enough for an adjustment on the dizzy.

She runs great now.

So you mentioned after you turn over the engine "The cam pulley should also line up. Since I have a NEW head mine lined up perfectly! :D " so does that mean that if my head is old it'll be hard to line up or it won't line up at all? I'm having trouble timing my engine it always jumps half a tooth. Any thoughts on that? Thank you

If you keep skipping the timing belt I would check the tensioner pulley. Also how old is your timing belt?
No,not all "old" heads should have a problem because all old heads may not have been machined.

I replaced the crank shaft seal, timing belt, and the tensioner.

how do you know you are jumping a tooth?
Does she run at all? TDC with dizzy on #4? There is a dot on the end of the dizzy gear that is supposed to line up with the front of a "nub"(for lack of a better word) cast in the rear center of the head. Is this in the correct spot?

Yes it runs, but it has a miss fire and it doesn't jump a tooth it's 1/2 a tooth witch I don't understand how or why? And the dizzy is pointing at #4

When installing the belt, did you go through the tensioning sequence of turning the whole thing counter clockwise and then clockwise again? it is to make sure any slack was out of the tensioner. to me it sounds like your belt is slipping.
For the misfire,if it is not involved with belt slip, have you done a basic tune up lately? If I have a miss, I start with cap rotor plugs and wires.

Yes once I went on with the belt I loosen the tensioner and then turn d counter clockwise the I tighten the tensioner and turned it clockwise. And my timing Marks won't line up perfect. I've replaced cap, rotor, spark plugs, cables and ignition coil.

I went back and reread this thread and I made the discovery that you may not have a new head like the one from OG posters instructions.
you may have the same problem I had,see requite below, or there is something going on with your tensioning sequence.

"I to was having a major problem getting my timing marks lined up. Poster T89 was having the same problem with one of the marks being a half tooth off. 1/2 tooth off is common. Especially if the head has been off the engine before and got a valve job and milled for flatness. I did a thread on correcting that a few years ago.
