Ok so the wimpy gears got introduced in '97 for auto & manual transmissions. JLEMOND also said the full gear set out of an earlier auto tcase should fit just fine, butt you'll need all three sets out of... say... A 92-95 auto tcase.

So that ratio difference would be around .10- .12 difference ??? Thanks BigSwede !!! Atleast that one was on the bench and easy to deal with. Made for a great write up/how to...

Brad if you can get hold of a 2nd gen 4L30E transfer case the full gear set will swap over (according to Jerry), this would be an even more notable upgrade then what you thought you were in for.

We all thought you would be getting this upgrade... 0.38:1 gain
1{eng}*3.767{man. 1st}*2.28{man. t-case low}*4.10{diffs}=35.214:1 (<-- 92-96 man.)
1{eng}*3.767{man. 1st}*2.66{auto t-case low}*4.10{diffs}=41.083:1 (<-- 92-96 auto)

You would actually be getting this upgrade... 0.61:1 gain
1{eng}*3.767{man. 1st}*2.05{man. t-case low}*4.10{diffs}=31.662:1 (<-- 97+ auto & man.) (<-- your current crawl ratio)
1{eng}*3.767{man. 1st}*2.66{auto t-case low}*4.10{diffs}=41.083:1 (<-- 92-96 auto)

Or you can get Revo lows for your application... 1.02:1 gain
1{eng}*3.767{man. 1st}*2.05{man. t-case low}*4.10{diffs}=31.662:1 (<-- 97+ auto & man.) (<-- your current crawl ratio)
1{eng}*3.767{man. 1st}*3.07{Revo Low}*4.10{diffs}=47.415:1 (<-- 97+ Revo low)

That's what the doner transfer case is from I think... 99 amigo with the 4l30E, when I counted teeth they apear to be an exact match. I didn't count teeth on the low drive idler gear that's on the main shaft, but counted the intermediate shaft and they had the same values... You would have to have atleast two different gears to mesh. What year are we talking about ???
Thanks do much for your efforts Psguardian !!!

I think you misread that. You will need a PRE 96 donor. Yours is 97+ so you have 2.050 & your 99 auto has 2.050... You need an auto tcase 92-96.

I did some web crawling, Jerry confirmed a few things for me also lol. I have a feeling the 92-96 auto tcase is about to become slightly more desirable to crawlers with 97+ rigs lol.

Yep it happens and hears proof !!
She's seen some abuse !!! Hopefully I can swap hubs around with a newer model one,
Along with the main shaft sincro hub...

Image

Image
Not sure it's even feesable to turn the hub around...

Image
The gear itself is just fine, the hubs softer material so it took the brunt of the abuse of being jammed into 4wd. Still smillin so far !!!

Postby trooper T/diesel » Thu Nov 03, 2011 11:51 pm

so there's no way to bolt it on, the auto T-case will not fit on the back of a manual trans.

what about mixing gears like we can do on the 2wd diesel tranys, to get a taller O\D
could there be a mix for a deeper LOW gear?
or are the two gears on the counter shaft made from one peace of steel, that would stop that idea....if it is....

I found a 92 automatic trooper t case. Advised from Psguardian and Jlemon , 92-95 is the available years. The low range ratio is 2:66:1, my 2000 amigo is 2:05:1 .... If all goes well I will put all the gears into my new t case housing. Hopefully keep the sincro on the front output shaft, and r&r the lockout piece on the shift rail to gain normal shifting instead of just hi/low......and keep the servo shifter possibly hooked up still.

It would probly work on yours, but the early isuzu's have a different gear mesh coming out of the tail shaft. Just something that needs to be checked. Do you know what your low drive ratio is ??

should be the 2.28-1 that's what all the charts say.

i thought the 2.6L and the 2.8L V-6 have different T-cases on the auto trans. i remember the 2.8L V-6 having a chain not gears....
so if it works it would need to be from a 2.6L auto to mach up :?: or a 92\95 auto trans model

If yours is a chain drive, it will be more chev or Borg Warner orientated I think. Do some research you might have any easy avenue of available parts !!!

This compares the new style front output shaft to the older non sincrode shaft..
As far as the shaft itself it's the same and the hub tooth count is the same lucky for me...

This compares the difference of the two gears.. I'm planning on pulling off the sincros and using the late model shaft and hub assembly.

Here's another fun fact as I sigh in relief , old first gen and second gen t case output spline.
Same spline and seal , meaning if you wanted to upgrade to bigger U joints and more travel, along with the bolt removal easement , You Can !!! The front drivelines bolt up to the old flanges. So if you wanted to you could upgrade by using front flanges on a late model drive shaft, same U joints....:) I'm hoping the speedo drive gear is the same location on the shaft and size...
