No, I needed it for a job quick and ran out of plate . But TBH they only bare the weight of the axle its not like it takes any shocks from the suspension. I have since welded the gap up as it was in the back of my mind, but nothing had moved after some serious off roading.

I would say its not finished till you fill it in but in truth it probably doesn't need it so long as you cut close to the top hole.

i was thinking more on the lines of, if you're in a crash, the crash investigation blokes would nit pick at the obvious homebrew mod, and quickly blame the crash on that- whether it was the cause or not
(similar to the bloke with the landy that rolled down a hill killing his kids recently when his homebrew swaybar disconnects broke)

good to hear you filled it in :) peace of mind and hiding the homebrew is always best

So just to clarify for a Noob.
I am going to be doing mine during a public holiday so nothing will be open so I'll need to get all the stuff before I do it and I won't be able to go and buy anything else.

The checklist for the job (please tell me what I've missed)

2x trolley Jacks (Can I get by with just 1?)
2x Drop Brackets
Diff Oil, little pump thingo to pump the oil in
Socket/ratchet/spanner set
Bearing Puller (don't have one, do I need one?)
Axle stands
Allen Keys
Welder and Grinder for modding the X-member
Grease for hubs
Needle nose pliers
10,000 Rags and some degreaser
Assorted v.basic tools like screwdrivers, hammers, pliers, vice grips.

What have I forgotten?
I'd have to get it done in a day (I'll be getting started at about 6am) so I need to get prepared early.

For the record... I wanted to know how much the diff weighs before I pulled it. Couldn't find anything, so I pulled it and weighed it. With both brackets attached and full of oil it weighs around 105Lbs. Just so you know what you're going to be handling.

I realize that this thread is quite old. But if anyone is still following it, I am looking for advice. I want to install a front locker on my 1986 Trooper II, turbo diesel. Is this a good example to follow?
