285s rubbing Trooper....cut or lift?

Postby ducktrooper1 » Mon Dec 12, 2016 12:14 pm

I recently bought new BFG AT Ko2's and they're big and wide..and they rub, unlike my previous pizza cutters. Even though I have about a 2" lift, they're still rubbing inside lower wheel wells when turned sharply. I removed the front mud flaps, and they still rub. It's been years since I raised torsion bars and I don't want to buy new shocks and springs right now....so what are my options? How much would I have to further lift torsion bars to gain about .5 to .75" of wheel clearance from the lower wheel well? Or, would I be better off cutting some of the plastic overfender and inside flaps/protection. Thanks.

You have stock wheels? Shouldn't be rubbing with 2" lift.

You can hammer down the seam at the back of the wheelwell... at least that is what I did to fit 35s.

I do have stock snowflake wheels and I think given the age of my vehicle, the lift may have settled a little lower over the years. Tires aren't rubbing much but they are touching. What kind of hammer do you suggest for hitting the seams...like a 3 lb metal hammer? Thanks.

Okay, the snowflakes are zero offset wheels IIRC. The stock 99 Trooper wheels have more backspacing and would not be rubbing with 285/75s.

As far as hammers, yeah I use a 3 lb, but whatever works. You'll have to remove your liner to get at the standing seam, probably have to cut your liner too.

Or just live with it, and let 'em self-clearance :)

Well, I do have my old wheels still, so that's an option. Would another half to 3/4 " lift on the torsions do the trick in your opinion? I know I'd have to get realigned but I need it anyway.

It's easy & free to crank it up a little & see. I mounted 285's on stock wheels & had no rubbing even at stock height for normal driving

It must be the snowflake wheels and added width of the 285s as Big Swede says bc I had no problem with 255/85/16s' on these wheels before.

Does anyone remember what one full turn of the torsion bar bolt equals in height? I seem to recall that one turn equaled 1/4" in height.

You are right. 4 turns =1"inch of lift. I say add 2 " BL to Trooper.
