largest size tires on stock steelies? anyone running 35's?

Postby Ricky » Wed Nov 02, 2016 4:17 pm

Guys,

I've been doing a bit of tire shopping for my 95 trooper. Plan is to mount up some tires to the stock steel wheels that I just had powdercoated. Now since I'm on a budget I need to know if it's possible to run a 315 75 16 on the stock steel wheels due to the need to buy a used set. So far I've found a set of 255/85r16 bfg's .315/75r16 bfg's. The 315's are mud terrains in great shape for a low price.

315 is pushing it for a 7" wheel. Possible issues are the bead not seating as well as a little wider wheel, the tread wearing more in the center and some shops won't mount them. That said, 12.5" wide tires on 7" wheels have been ran by thousands of people. The 315/75s are tall, wide and heavy. Keep in mind the effect on gearing and component wear. But big tires are cool which trumps a lot and the bigger the tire, the smaller the obstacle.

I decided to go tall and skinny. Sadly two of the set i found got sold. So i just need to track down 3 more 255 85 16 bfgs. I'm pretty bummed to be doing the used tire thing. However my budget right now dictates it.

Just got the tires and wheels mounted up. Definitely glad I went tall and skinny. However many thanks to those who offered advice on how wide I could have gone on the factory steelies. Attached are some pics

Looks great! I really like that size. I wish they were more common (cheaper) but I think they are a great way to go.

I've got 35x12.5x15 tires on 8" wheels. It's great for wheeling, but makes for fairly mushy road handling...I think 7" would be even worse.

I bought this set used, but plan on buying from simpletire.com when I need to replace them. I have used them in the past for other vehicles. The prices and selection are better than Tire Rack.
