Well the timing belt job and changing the front seals went well. Looks like somebody changed them but didnt press them in all the way. Its been 2 weeks and no leaks from the front cover yet. Also re sealed the lower oil pan, since I thought that was leaking. That turned out to be my dipstick tube leaking. Im still chasing that one down. My remaining annoying oil leaks are just the dipstick tube and the oil filter adapter.

The more work I do to this engine the more it looks like somebody has been into it. The lower oil pan was full of old gasket chunks. Im glad I changed that gasket, if nothing more than to clean out the crap. Head looks to have been a rebuilt/new replacement. The hood has definetly been off before as its not lined up very well. Im just not sure how good of a job they did when they were in there. Maybe I will save and rebuild the 2.6 in my parts truck...

Well in the last week I changed my exhaust manifold gasket, and I think I have the carb dialed in. After a few days I will check plugs and have a good idea of any fuel consumption changes. The primary main jet I increased to a 145 from a 140. If its too rich or consumption goes up I have a 142 I will settle on. With the 140 I was averaging 16 MPG, the first tank I ran with the 145 I got 15mpg, but one tank isnt enough to get a good idea. I still think 16 MPG is low for my setup though.

This is why I love Amazon. $220 with free 2 day shipping for this VIAIR 400H compressor. Im later planning to add a 2 gallon air tank, somewhere, but for now its just a hardmount to replace my bulky Smittybilt 2871 portable.
Image

This is where the 87's puny washer fluid tank comes in handy. Lots of available room on the passenger inner fender. I had to relocate a couple of VSV's, the 2 for EVAP and one that wasnt being used with my weber. I removed the one that wasnt used, and I will bolt the 2 for the EVAP down when its not so cold outside. For now its ziptied to a wire harness
Image
Image

And then it was a matter of drilling 4 holes, 4 bolts, and the basic wiring for the hardmount compressor. All it is is just ground and positive, the 400H has a built in on/off switch. Mounting here has allowed me to cut some length off the wires, which is preffered for the high amperage. When I add the tank I will be adding a pressure switch, dash switch, and a relay into the mix.
Image

I had a leftover wire harness retainer clip, so I bolted it to an un-used threaded hole in the relay bracket to hold the leader hose. Keeps it from getting caught in anything, and when I need to unhook it all I have to do is bend the clip up. Now off to home depot to pick up a coiled air hose

Well my LF speaker hasnt worked since I owned the truck and today I got around to changing the front speakers. When I took the LF speaker out I saw it had a bunch of water stains on it, and then I noticed it had a small pool of water in the enclosure. Shortly after I noticed a water drop running down the kickpanel. Follow that up to a 2" round hole in the top of the kickpanel, looks like it would be for a wire harness to pass through. Water isnt coming from there, so I keep looking up and bingo, just above that hole theres a panel joint, with seam sealer on it. Theres a 1/16th hole in that seam sealer and water is dripping from there.

I dont know if all this seam sealer has shrunk over time or if it was done wrong from new, but I seem to have lots of issues with small holes in my seam sealer on this truck.

So a few weeks ago my clutch cable snapped, leaving the truck out of operation for a week and a half while a new one came from Rockauto. Once in, the clutch felt awesome for a week then it started getting rough, and sounded like metal on metal creaking when I operated the pedal. I thought it may have been cause I didnt lube the cable, but internet searches and the 3 old school mechanics I talked to said I shouldnt have to lube the cable. I unhooked it at both ends and the cable moved freely, so I put it back on and kept going. Well today, after maybe a week and a half since it started creaking, it started sticking at the bottom of the travel. By the end of the day it wouldnt come up unless I pulled it up.

Wanting to see what was binding, I got the pedal to stick at the bottom, and watched the cable at the pedal as I pulled it up, and it didnt slack up. That told me that the cable wasnt binding. I got it to stick again and watched the clutch fork at the trans while my girlfriend pulled the pedal up for me, and again free movement with no slack.

I didnt feel like crawling under the truck in the pouring rain to unhook the cable and test pedal movement, but Im 99% sure its something in the pedal itself, either in the pivot bolt or the springy looking thing between the pedal and the firewall. In the meantime I improvised with a bungee cord, and all is working perfectly. I hope I get a chance to rip it all apart at work tomorrow

Just as I thought. The spring apparatus behind the pedal was worn out through the eyelets, the pivot pin is worn too. You can see where the eyelet was rubbing and binding on the pedal.

The pedal is worn too. I put it back together without that piece for the meantime. It springs back fine without it but I put my bungee back on just to be sure

Well I installed my Jerry Cam today. I've only driven it around the neighborhood so far, but it seems like I'm having to stomp on this things neck alot less than before.
I live in a very hilly neighborhood, and before, the Trooper struggled to keep up with the speed limit of 60kmh, the grade of this hill ranges from 9% to 12%, and it's about 2 km up to my house. Now I'm noticing it's not struggling as much.
I am.still going to recheck the timing with a more accurate light, and check my sparkplug color to see if the truck wants to be a little richer or leaner with the new can.

Well with the Jerry Cam it was better but still sluggish, anything more than half throttle and it just bogged right down.

An old hot rodder told me if theres alot of fuel vapor suspended in the top of your carb when you rev the engine, you have excessive backpressure. Sure enough that was my case. I suspected the cheap cat I put in it may be plugging.

I wanted to re do the exhaust anyways. The PO really hodge-podged it, and I kinda added to it when I put that cat on. So today I eliminated the cat, and fixed the hodge-podge of random pieces of pipe held together with booger welds and clamps. It's a little louder, but that's ok, cause it's got the power it should have now

Re: 87 Trooper II 2 door DLX

So while washing it last week I noticed I could push the windows in the rear doors in and out of their seals about 1/8th of an inch so I ordered some new window seals from Jerry.

I've wanted to tint the windows and it turns out so much better when the windows are out and on the bench. So I picked up my seals from the cross border parcel place, picked up some 5% tint from crappy tire, and drove to my dad's place for some help.

Once the windows were out, we cleaned them and placed them on our pool table. My dad started cutting the tint while I cleaned the lips on the doors. Once the tint was on the glass, it was the opportune time to head out to the pub for dinner, to give time for the tint to dry and fully adhere. When we got back it was dark, but the tint was properly adhered.
Image

Then we slid the new seals onto the glass, and fed the rope in to the seal afterwards. I used cheap yellow 3/16ths nylon rope, but if I were to do it again I'd use 1/8th inch Paracord. While the yellow stuff worked, it was a little thick and the Paracord is smoother
Image

And here the windows are all installed. I'll get some daylight pics tomorrow morning. Now I have to figure out how to get the side windows out of their track so I can tint them
Image

And just for fun, a pic of my truck next to my dad's 91 2.8 5 speed. It's waiting for a new clutch...
