HB'S RS or ISUZU FEVER

Postby itsmehb » Sun Oct 26, 2014 4:24 pm

Not sure yet how much of a build this will become, but thought I would post some pictures of my new RS. Found , after looking a while, by following up on Isuzugeek's post in the classified. It involved a trip to the great PNW as this section of our country seems to have more of our Isuzu's. I made a decision to sell my 2000 Amigo to get this 89 RS. It wasn't that easy of a decision to make as I really like my Amigo. What swayed me was the Amigo has the infamous 2.2, and although all's well now, I am following most of the comments here that in the long run problems may arise. I already did a valve job on it and I have also worked on the 2.3, and I much preferred the work on the 2.3. And also I have Isuzu fever and always wanted the elusive RS.

The Amigo is still the RS's neighbor in the back of the house. I wouldn't sell it on here as I wouldn't want to burden a member with the 2.2 and the oil leaks. The RS has it's share of leaks which I will attend to soon. Most from the front end of the engine. I'm thinking oil pump or front main or maybe both areas.

I really could go crazy with this one, but probably will just focus on cosmetic issues as long as it's running good. It needs a paint job. Before that gets done I have to find a good large rear door. Mine's tweeked some. The snowflakes need to be professionally redone. And I want to put some 31x10.5x15's on the wheels. It now has 235x75x15's on it. Needs a new windshield eventually. It's not cracked but has a large rock chip that's been filled to prevent it from spreading. The interior is in pretty good overall shape, except for the drivers seat. Could use a sound system upgrade. And I'm really drawn to the round headlight look. I may do that to.

Pulled the grill and front bumper off. Repainted the grill Graphite in color. Used this in the past and had good luck with it. It's Dupli-color wheel paint, made by Sherman Williams. Damn bumper, now that's another story. PO must have used a grinder on it and there are loads of marks that are impossible to remove, there in the metal. There are also loads of rock chips that are to hard to feather out. Going to remove the end caps and strip it down to bare metal. And, Arch, there is a red stripe under all that silver paint. Haven't decided yet if I'll keep those fog lights. They were not wired up, and they don't look that great on the bumper. May end up with a round eye grill, but this will improve the look until I can get one.

I bet your happy to finaly have that thing in your possession !! That's a great starter rig as for condition , your patientce payed off ... If the paints really stuck to the bumper you can use some body filler (amc icing) , stuff is great !! Sometimes it's not worth the time to strip everything if it's still bonded ...

Thanks Brad,
Yes, I'm glad it's here. Had a good experience shipping it. Tried stripper on the bumper. Your right. It's not working well. I'd have to do it several time as there's a layer or two of silver paint on top of the original. May just wet sand it with heavy paper and call it good. This is not a professional job as I'm just rattle canning it. Never heard of the filler you mentioned, but will look into it.

Thanks Brad and Arch,
The bumper was straightened in the past, probably with a big hammer and a grinder was probably used to remove paint or metal. The grinder marks could be filled I guess, but it's not noticeable from a distance, so I'll probably just wet sand it first with heavy paper, then hit it with several coats of primer before I finish it. I may tackle the oil leak next. Arch, did you replace any front end seals when you had yours apart, namely the oil pump and the front crank (front main)? Not sure they are replaceable without tearing the engine to far apart.

When I tore the thing down I went ahead and changed the front seal, water pump, timing belt and tensioner. I may have can extra seal if you need it. You have any oil leaked now?

I guess it's the best excuse for you to check out the timing belt condition :) Just gotta pull the external accessories and timing cover's which by the sounds of it are going to need to be removed anyway ...

Really if you just have rock chips you can grab a can of sandable primer and use that as a build up, dries fast and doesn't dough up in the sand paper as bad.. It shouldn't take to much more time but will look better in the end...

Put front bumper back on .Put 3 coats of primer on and sanded with 400 wet paper between coats. Still lots of flaws up close. Looks good in the picture though. Eliminated the fog lights, at least for now. If I do the leaky seals, then the timing belt and tensioner will also get changed.

Brad,
Haven't driven it enough to know the oil usage. I do know it drips at several places up front. Appears the oil is mostly on the right side like the oil filter would be leaking. It's not. I expect it's getting slung there by the lower pulley. There is oil dripping out the bottom of the lower timing cover. I am thinking of replacing the oil pump seal as well as the crank seal along with the timing belt and tensioner. PO said the water pump is fairly new so I will probably leave it alone. I have to secure a space in the garage before I start though. Putting up a friend and his wife for the month, so with my 5 and his 2 cars there's seven here, so that job might take a back seat for a while.
