When I move overseas I may end up doing this swap with my Trooper. That or say screw it, sell my trooper over here, and buy one over there that's already a Diesel.

Amazing build and extremely informative. I now know what needs to be done in order for this build. All in due time though.

I love the '01 man. Good work. Everything looks stock-ish. I love that look.

Wish I could put a RTT on MY Trooper.... ARB told me it's a no go on the 96...

Could you possibly post some more information about the supplier of your 4JG2TC 3.1? I'm having a crappy time trying to find one for myself.

IDK if you're still looking, but here's a good deal on a Japan Low-Mileage Motor & Transmission.

I wonder if this swap is possible in a 97 Rodeo? *Making note to do research*

Wow!!! I like 'em! I also have a family of Isuzu's. I just went through a diesel swap with my '95. I bought it with the conversion already done, but while my parents were driving it out from Arizona to California, it lost oil pressure and spun a bearing and scored the crankshaft. After months of trying to find all of the parts, I could not find the crankshaft that would for sure fit my 4JG2 TD. I ended up ordering a "new" '94 4JG2 TD block from the UK. After more than a year, it is running.

I would love to pick your brain sometime if you don't mind. My mechanical skills are still being honed. I am trying to get some of the electrical bugs worked out (i.e. tachometer hooked up, glow plug pre-heater wired to the ignition, etc).

Thanks, mine is still a work in progroess for sure. I don't have my tach hooked up yet but will hopefully figure that out soon. The glow plus I just have wired to a push button using a ford starter relay.

Lately I've been tackling little small projects. Here is a list below, I'll try to get some pics..

Connected "High Idle" switch using a factory cruise switch and a vacuum solenoid left over from the 3.5.

Bought and installed autometer EGT.

Came up with a different trans mount and engine mounts, she's smooooooth now

Got all factory gauges working, with the exception of the tach.

Found some paint that matches the factory tan color (flat dark earth gun paint) and repainted gauge pod.

That's all i can think of now, I'm sure there is more I can't think of. I've been daily driving it for almost a year now.

At the end of this month my inspection was due. So this morning I took her over to the inspection shop to see what they say. I told the guy I have converted my truck to diesel, he said no problem and asked if it had diesel in it now. I said yes and he open the gas cap and smelled the diesel, then went on with the inspection.... only $14.50 and I'm good to go. I can't believe it was that easy!!!!!! I've been stressing for a year about this...

Chris,

Just finished the conversion a few weeks ago and I'd, also, been dreading going to the Tag Office (for over a year) to title & register my 89 and find out what I had to do. So a week before the URE trip, I arrived at the Tag Office, title and check book in hand to find out what kind of maze was awaiting me. The lady at the window took my paperwork and while she was examining it, I explained it has been converted to diesel... her face glazed over and she gave a big sigh. Then a couple minutes later she handed me my new plate and advised she changed the fuel type from Gas to Diesel and infomed me the new title will be mailed to me within a couple of weeks. No inspection, no verification, no emissions, no nada. That was it! Talk about EASY! I had the biggest grin walking out of a government office astonished at how fast and easy it was. No emissions testing ever again for this Trooper. I LOVE IT! I understand your joy.

onebadtrooper wrote:Well i've put about 1200 miles in it. So far so good. I bought a tool to adjust me injection timing, it was .010 advanced. It runs really good now, a bit longer to start with no glow plugs after adjusting the timing.

Had a custom exhaust made up on friday, i told them how i wanted it run the same way as factory but they ran the exhaust down the passenger side. They did a good job so no worries. I went with a flowmaster and 2.5" pipe, she is nice and quite until you step on it.

I'm getting a quote for a diesel dash cluster with diesel tach. Also getting fuel filler kneck, fuel filter housing with pump, and glow plug computer.
Did you advance your timing more or retard it and were did you set it at?
More to come....

Hi,
my name is Dan and I am about to do this same 4jg2 5 speed manual swap. My Trooper is a 1999 3.5 with a 5 speed manual. I am interested to know how all the transmission wiring swaps over ie transmission speed sensor and also the tach and how you got the other stock gauges (fuel, temp, oil psi) working. Please anyone is welcome to respond if you have legitimate wisdom to pass on. This is a rock and roll swap thread. thanks a lot.

I just wanted to give a little update on this after 2-3 years. The trooper is still doing awesome, its driven daily. The diesel has never skipped a beat!!! couldn't be more happy with it. I've since got married, bought a house and have a 5 month old so the projects have slowed down quite a bit.

OneTroop you still around?

I was wondering if you put anything in the fuel system to send fuel the the mechanical pump, since you removed the gas in-tank pump and put a straw in there lol... Seemed like a long way to draw fuel from the tank/strainer? through filter, 12-14ft of line to the pump? Does it really draw it that far?
Also, what about your drivetrain (axles) My rear axle looks too long and front too short, what did you do to solve that one? TIA

I'm not speaking for "OneTroop"....but am answering since I did the 3.5L gas to 3.1L diesel swap. Yes the injection pump is the only pump needed to pull fuel from the tank. I used 3/8" line from rear to front and ran it directly into the tank through the gas sending unit cap lol...... not a long way at all. Be sure to use a water seperator with a prime pump on it.....as this will aid if you ever run out of fuel or need to reprime after injector /pump work has been done. As to the (drive shafts/prop shafts lengths) the rear one has to be shortened by a drive shaft shop. The front one will work just fine as is.

I built a large spin-on filter mount setup under the chassis in front of the tank that I can put a water-sep style filter on, but it doesn't have a primer pump on it. Ill have to look into that, good idea. Another about the fuel system, pressure relief/return line. My mechanical pump has the larger inlet? on the front (towards the front of motor, and what looks like the return outlet (1/4") on the back? Is that a return outlet? And this stop solenoid, that has to stay hot to stay open yes? Both wires, one? The other gets? TIA

Wow this is a great thread! I am just finishing up a 4GJ2 conversion on a 2001 Trooper as well and this thread has been a great resource and inspiration. Did you ever get a chance to test the towing capacity? I'm wondering if I'll be able to pull a decent sized(4000-5000lb) travel trailer behind mine.
