Postby imamonstertruck » Thu Nov 03, 2016 9:58 pm

So Carol has been wanting to get a pull behind camper for a while and with her finishing up her Executive MBA next spring, we have decided on a Casita.

We are looking at the 16' and im curious of the tow capacity of my 91.

Ian all 1st gens have a tow capacity of 2,000 lbs. I tow a lot with Red Beans and I'd keep the load under that. I sure try to. Don't forget the 800lbs of personal gear that will add to it.

Personally I'd stick to a light pop up. Talk to Jerry about towing a Casita with a 1st gen. He has a 2nd gen with a supercharged 3.5 to tow his!
These links have write-ups and pics of most anything you ever will do on a 2.6 Isuzu. Engine, brakes, suspension, interior, you name it! Enjoy!

Ask Shaggy how his does. I'm sure the 3.4 with 4.77s help over stock. I would definitely want a brake controller to help with stopping it. I would also consider the big brake upgrade if you haven't already.

The 3.4 and 4.77's are a big plus, but the RS's shorter wheelbase is a negative. X2 on the brake control and/or big brake mod. I'd definitely want a weight distributing hitch that was set up properly.

He said his 91, which should be a standard length, not the RS wheelbase. Shouldn't be a problem with a standard length. Weight distributing hitch might be a plus. Maybe see if many people with the Casitas use them.

I'd drop to a smaller tire if I was going to be towing with your rig, and I'd probably make it a load D or E in a 265/70 or 265/75/16 (roughly 31x10 or 32x10 respectively). The 3.4 and 4.77's should definitely help over a 2.6 or 2.8 with 4.56's, but the 33's rob a lot of that benefit, and it will likely make itself known when you are towing at capacity. I'd also do the big brake upgrade, and get a load distributing hitch as well as a brake controller.

Edit: and consider upgrading to the heavy ome springs out back as well if you don't already run those or an add a leaf, or some big timbren style bumpstops or something to keep from bottoming out hard with the added tongue weight.

Thank you guys. These are all incredible suggestions.

It is the 91 and I do have a set of flakes that I will mount smaller tire on. The trailer would get the high lift axel which will help level the thing and will also have trailer brakes as well as sway control.

The leaf upgrade has me on the fence but I think would help a great deal.

Work had me in Dallas which allowed me the opportunity to visit the Casita outfit. Also, Casita put us in touch with a couple who has the exact trailer we are looking to build. They are not opposed to us driving to Lexington KY to see how she rides.

Again, thanks guys. Ill keep ya posted

Cheers
