89 S10 2.8 engine noise

Postby Von » Fri Oct 14, 2016 1:42 pm

Same POS I replaced the power steering pump bracket on.

The kid has a job lined up in Gainesville and would be staying with his grandmother about 40 minutes away so I was trying to get the dang thing running decent. He said it didn't have much power on acceleration and asked me to look at it. I started it up to pull it around to the shop and heard this awful screeching racket. Looked for fan or pulley rubbing, nuthin. Pulled the serpentine belt and it still did it. The rubber in the harmonic balancer looked okay and didn't see any indication the balancer was wobbling and hitting something.

Pulled the water pump and timing cover off and the timing chain was all stretched out. Chain guide was chewed up from the chain hitting it and saw marks on the front of the block where it'd been rubbing. COOL, found it!

Just finished putting the new timing chain and guide on, got it all buttoned up and started it.... SAME noise. WTH... Spun bearing?

I've sort of ruled out the flywheel... It sounds like it's coming from the front and I drilled a small hole in the aluminum flywheel cover so I could keep the flywheel in place with a screwdriver while unbolting the harmonic balancer... and removed the starter, and didn't see or feel any indication that the flywheel might be broken.

So, can anyone tell me what this noise might be?

Started it up again to check oil pressure. 50 psi at idle 60 right off idle. Pulling cross member under the front of the trans and the front drive shaft so I can get the flywheel cover off, might as well make sure....

Could be a cool little truck... but I'm starting to really hate it.

I hate to say this, but that sounds a lot like a blown head gasket. Compression check anybody? Those engines are bad for exhaust leaks too (exhaust manifold bolts), but those usually don't squeal. Dennis

Thanks Dennis. Couldn't find anything wrong g with the flywheel. Did find a busted exhaust manifold bolt.
Had him start it while I was underneath and either the screech went away or it just sounds better from underneath.
I'll do a compression test today.

Well... That didn't go well...
2,4,6,1 were 90psi. 3 and 5 were 70 and 30.

I ran it for few minutes before testing and that screech would come and go. When it went away I could hear a knocking. Another potentially cool truck dead.... Wish I knew more about the rest of the truck, tempted to offer him 250 and rebuild it.
Interior is pretty ratty and steering column needs a rebuild. 4x4 works but do t know about the trans.

Wife has been wanting a truck for going to garage sales.... and she's skeered of my truck.

Get a 3.4 out of a '93-'95 Camaro, it'll drop right in.

Strip the Camaro block of all accessories and intake/exhaust, then take anything that's different from the 2.8 and bolt to the 3.4.

Use the 4x4 pan from the 2.8. Use the 3.4's oil pump but you'll have to remove the oil pickup tube and replace it with a pickup meant for the 4x4 pan (P/N's Melling 245S, Clevite/Sealed Power 601-8129).

Recommend using the timing cover from the 2.8, because the Camaro cover doesn't have a timing scale, as is used for the TBI model's distributor. And goes without saying the timing chain set and timing damper should be renewed! Just transfer all the good parts from your dead engine.

You'll have close to 160hp and WAY more torque than the old 2.8. It'll probably be a tire-burner with the light weight of an S-10 compared to my Trooper's 4000-lb+ weight.

Best upgrade ever made for an S-10 truck (besides a V8)!

Cheers........ed

I wish. Those Camaro 3.4s are like hens teeth around here. The one I got for my Trooper years ago was 500, spun bearings and all...

My wife wasn't keen on using it for garage sales, and I can't justify keeping it for me. The boy is going to try selling it as is.

If he ever gets around to growing up I think he should check into leasing....

I was really hoping that you had a resolution for this instead of declaring it dead... Oh well. Can't wait to see what he kills next!

Other than my will to live?

Other than the crap engine and ratty interior, and the exterior... Mechanically the rest is sound. And the AC works. Shame. It'd make a great deer lease or fishing truck with an overhaul. If he can't unload it I might pull the heads and oil pan just to see how bad the rest of it is. If it doesn't require any serious machine work... That's where the real money is.

But I'm not getting my hopes up....
