My new tow truck!

Postby squatch » Mon Aug 22, 2016 5:08 pm

Not that kind of tow truck, A boat towing truck. :D
2006 Toyota Tundra. 43k miles. Previous owner was an older man who took it to the dealer every 6 months for an oil change, Maintenance check and a wash and detail whether it needed it or not. Carfax was crazy. Sometimes only a few hundred miles between changes.

Looks like this bed has seen a lot of use, NOT!

I think it got the factory frame wax recall and they pulled the bed to do it. Then had Lines X patch the bed bolts.

It's a 4door.

Like new inside, out and underneath. I need to add some Firestone airbags for the camper. But once that's done it should be able to carry the camper and haul the boat at the same time. I'm keeping Red Beans. But since she blew her top I didn't have a tow vehicle for an upcoming vacation and this appeared so............

I'll will now probably sell Black beans and concentrate on Red Beans. If you are interested in Black Beans let me know.

I was referring to the paint, not the running condition.

Actually Redbeans looks like she is flashing the "Built not Bought" window sticker at the Toyota. She probably considers the Toyota to be a "mall crawler".

Beautiful truck, better than a new one! I agree with Jerry, the monstrosities they're building now are just too dang big!!

Just last week I was driving my Mom's 2002 4Runner (only 78,000 miles, like new!) in Tacoma and we passed a really nice Land Cruiser. I thought it was kinda large compared to Mom's rig, but then a much newer Tundra on huge wheels pulled up behind us and all I could see was part of his grille!

It dwarfed even the Land Cruiser and I couldn't have got in the thing without a stepladder. No Thanks! I like my '98 Frontier King Cab, it's easy to drive and gets great mpg. And just turned 78,000 miles as well, bought it from the original owner 10 years ago!

My brother picked up a 1998 T100 (precurser to the Tundra) last year and he really likes it. The 3.4 V6 has over 300,000 miles and runs like new.

That Tundra should run forever as well, you'll have a great tow rig for your fleet of ZuZu's!

Nice! Tundras (and most toyotas) are great, long lasting vehicles. What a gem to find not even broken in yet! That one should last you a couple more decades.

As the owner of a 4Runner, I think you made a solid choice. And the fact that is a few years older means that you won't have a lemon and there will be plenty of shared user experience on the inter webs.

Once Black Beans is patched up and outta there, are you going to focus on Red Beans or tackle both in tandem to get Red Beans up and running quickly?

Is the Tundra 4 wheel drive?

Pretty sure your Tundra has the same trussed "V6" rear differential as the '03 Tacoma I acquired within the last 14 months. If so I can highly recommend this Eaton-made LSD http://www.ebay.com/itm/KAZUMA-TRD-LIMI ... 51e54b9427 along with these http://parts.toyotaofdallas.com/toyota/ ... e-bearings new bearings. I installed one in my Tacoma, best mod I've done by far.
You should be able to install yourself, the bearings install against the carrier, the shims are outboard of the bearings against the caps, so if shim thickness needs adjusted the bearings remain in place.

Yes 4WD. You know me. The rest will be decisions made when I get there and subject to change constantly.

One of the new tires the dealer put on had a vibration. I took the truck to a good local place for a road force balance and they couldn't balance one of them. I had a 1,000 mile warranty on the truck because I bought it from a dealer. So yesterday I drove 2 hours to the dealer and they replaced it. While I was driving i decided to visit a friend on the other side of the state to show off the truck. I figured I'd wring it out a bit. I put over 300 miles on it yesterday. Drove out a tank of gas. So I checked the mileage. 17.7 MPG! Not bad as I wasn't exactly driving like an old lady. These trucks historically are known for crappy fuel economy. I drove through the mountains in the am and by evening went through Baltimore and DC beltway traffic to the bay. Little bit of everything. The truck handles it all well and has plenty of power.

Good deal on the tires. Almost 18 mpg is great for a first gen Tundra especially with those hills!

Talked to the local dealer parts guy today. He pulled up my VIN info. My truck came from the factory with a real Limited Slip Diff. Not just the electronic nanny stuff.
