2012 Kia Sportage Daily Driver - Rod Bearing job

Postby MarcusInMD » Thu Jun 23, 2016 5:37 pm

I have 114K miles on my SX and about a month ago it developed a knock. Did some extensive troubleshooting and have determined that the #4 cylinder rod bearing is probably toast.

14k miles out of warranty and my daily driver is now dead.

This vehicle was well taken care of and had oil changes between 3 and 5k miles with Mobile 1 synth and mobile 1 filter. Both ALWAYS replaced.

So, this weekend I am going to drop the oil pan and see how bad it looks.

If its not too bad, I have been thinking about polishing the crank journal and replacing the bearing after plastigauge ing it.

Anyone ever have success doing this while the motor is still in the car?

Knock is not terrible yet but its obvious at 1500 to 2000 and some times at idle.

Finally got the oil pan off after a broken A/C compressor mount bolt.

It does not look pretty.

To make matters worse, this oil pump/balance shaft module is in the way so I can't get up into #4 to see how bad the damage really is.

The bottom end is so clean for the mileage. When we got it apart the gasket material was all over the inside of the oil pan. The factory may have caused this mess. But Kia won't do a damn thing about it.

Looks like I will be punting this one. It's my daily driver and I need it back. The trooper just uses too much gas. So, $4000 for a new short block and install is coming. :( Then I will drive it for a year and get rid of the trouble. And yes, its been nothing put trouble since I bought it.

Sad to say but the boneyards down here are full of those things. I think someone said they were good cars, but at 100K they are done. Dennis

Yes it does especially when the truck just went out of warranty and you are still making payments.

Yep I'm way too familiar with that story. That's why I'm driving old junk now.

Re: 2012 Kia Sportage Daily Driver - Rod Bearing job

Postby MarcusInMD » Sat Jul 16, 2016 8:36 am

Things are going from bad to worse with this vehicle.

Got a call last week from the shop. It appears that the replacement short block cannot be sourced. Only a NEWLY designed short block with a NEWLY designed oil pump/balance shaft assembly can be had. Hmm...Wonder why? So, in order to get this thing wrapped back up it will cost me another $800 to $1000 for the new oil pump/balance shaft. So I would have at least $4500 to $5000 in repairs now.

The Kia optima with the same motor during the same years has had its engine warranty extended from 100k to 120k (owners started getting letters last month!) because of rod bearing failures!!!!! But NOT my Sportage. Figures right???? I am talking with Kia again and the only way I will get some kind of relief from them is if I roll the dice and take a chance ($$$) on having them diagnose the rod bearing failure an cough up all of my receipts for oil changes I have done. (I have them but it will be a major pain digging them up for sure) The shop that it's at has agreed to tow it to the dealer I bought the sportage at for $75.00 flat but I will still be responsible for hourly charges for tearing into it once it's at Kia to figure out what is wrong (DUH!) an whether it was Kia's fault or mine (Ha!) Then if they decide not to help me I wil be responsible for putting it all back together again. Geeze.

Right now, I am leaning towards having it dropped back off at the house and then either buttoning it back up putting oil in it and sending it on it's way as a trade or car max car. OR biting the bullet once again and tearing that oil pump off the bottom (take front of motor apart of course to get that timing chain tensioner loose. and see if I can polish out that crank shaft and put a new bearing on it.

Personally I wouldn't mess with it right now. Park it and try working with KIA. Don't do anything rash. Obviously there is an issue with the motor. Maybe KIA will come around?

Marcus you need a lawyer. Kia will not listen to you. They will deal with a lawyer. That's just the way it works. The 1-800 people sound like they are trying to help. But in reality their job is to make you go away. Been there done that.

These people might already be working on it. I've used them before. worth a call.

Thanks guys.

Heard back from my contact at the local shop (he used to work for Kia) and he was in contact with the service manager at my dealer. He said they would be willing to look at it for me (obviously for $$) BUT, he has 8 vehicles waiting for new short blocks!!! Wait, What?

Oh Boy.

June 16, 2016 — A Kia Theta engine lawsuit has been filed concerning alleged engine problems in the 2011-2014 Kia Optima, 2011-2014 Kia Sportage and the 2012-2014 Kia Sorento. However, the plaintiffs claim more Kia models could be added later to the Theta engine class-action lawsuit.

The Kia Theta engine lawsuit targets the Theta 2-liter and 2.4-liter gasoline direct injection engines, also known as GDI engines. According to the plaintiffs, the engines contain defects that cause a restriction of oil flow through the connecting rod bearings and other parts of the engines.

The lawsuit alleges the defect causes stalling and complete engine failure at any time, including while driving, making the problem a serious safety hazard. In addition, the plaintiffs say the defect rears its head during or shortly after the limited warranty has expired.

Well,
I didn't want to do it but had no choice. The sportage is no more. Stopped by a "local" dealer and they gave me a really good deal and gave me a very fair price for the sportage including towing it. I am back in a Japanese vehicle. I just hope I don't have the kinds of problems that Squatch did with a new car!!!

After driving RAV4, CRV, Escape....None compared to the ride and handling of the Mazda CX-5. Even without turbo this thing gets up and goes pretty good. It's also an AWD. Really wanted a FWD because of the better fuel economy (26/33 vs 24/30) but they are near impossible to find around these parts. This deal made financial sense since my payment is only a "few" dollars more then what I was paying on the sportage and it's brand new with a new warranty. I think once I get close to the end of the warranty period I will revisit new cars again.
