Having ignition problems please help!

Postby Phototrooper » Wed Jan 11, 2017 5:44 pm

So the other day mybtroopee started acting funny. I had been driving around in the snow helping out a few friends, my trooper started back firing and then sputtered until it turned off. Managed to get it running again on the side of the road only for it to turn off about a mile down the road. I got a ride from a sheriffs deputy(thank god for law enforcement officers) and got a new ignition coil which I thought was the problem. By the time I got back it sat long enough that i got it to start again to get it home. Drove it to work and back two days, and the. Last night when to a friends house and boom, it couldn't get it to start when I tried to leave. So I went back today to put on the new coil and it still won't start with the new coil. I'm now thinking it's the ignition control module. Anyone have one close to central Virginia? I don't really want to pay for a brand new one if that's not the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Before I bought it, but the timing belt doesn't look damaged in anyway. I know the truck jumped timing at some point. But it's been running fine til recently.

Sounds like it jumped time again. These are interference engines, meaning, once the timing has jumped, you run a definite risk of the valves bending and possibly doing more damage to your engine. That'd be my first educated guess. Especially in light of the fact that you said it had jumped time before. Belt can look fine, but still be bad - stretched too far, or damaged in some other way. Sounds like you may as well do a complete top-end rebuild - have the head reworked, new headgasket, new timing components, new water pump, and rebuild the oil pump and distributor (see my signature). All new seals and gaskets. Not a super-difficult job to do yourself, if you have any mechanical aptitude, but expect it to cost around $300-500 for parts and head rework at a good machine shop. Probably more like $1500 for a shop to do it. Can be done in a single day, if you have everything ready to go.

I really hope that's not the problem. I'll have to look at it again tomorrow. I really hope my I can get it fixed enough to get home. It does attempt to start but doesn't acatually start.

The fact that you drove it for 2 days after the first time it stalled, I would not suspect the timing belt. I would make sure it has fuel pressure, it may be a failing fuel pump. How much fuel is in it? When my pump went out, it would work fine except for when it went below 3/8's of a tank.

My initial thought was fuel pump, but when the OP mentioned backfiring and sputtering, that changed my approach.

It has a half tank in it right now, oddly enough it's only given me problems right after I filled it up, two different gas at stations that have never Caused problems before. Im going to check the dizzy today, before I attempt to pull the ignition control module.

Simplest is distributor rotor. Had it go bad before, similiar symptoms. Dennis

Okay, update time, I came back to try and work on it, tried to start it for shits and giggles. It started right up idled for a ew seconds and then boom, slowly died off. I'm not sure what the problem would be now.

Try the fuel pump jumper. You'll have to search for it. Maybe your alternator is going bad and if so, your fuel pump won't stay running.

I already have the fuel pump jumped, and the alternator I replaced last year, so it shouldn't be bad yet.

Can anyone point me to a distributor rebuild kit? If there is one, I'm sure it's cheaper than buying a new one. There's a little bit of oil in mine. I'm hoping that fixes my problem, also, what all do I need to do to replace my timing belt, and fix my timing to be right. Right now the plug wires are on backwards and that's how it runs lol.

See the link in my signature for distributor rebuild thread.

There's not a kit, per set, but the seal is available online.
