'92 Amigo "ice water swishing" glovebox sound on cold start

Postby 5009TWI » Wed May 10, 2017 9:37 pm

Started about a month after i got the truck last May. Was barely noticeable when it started. As mentioned in this video...

https://1drv.ms/v/s!AnfueX64pupJ9QFexqUljwS2qN8F

...it only happens on cold start, and is gone by the time the engine is fully warmed up.

Notes:
1) i haven't checked the a/c condensation drain as i never use the a/c
2) steering back and forth doesn't seem to have any effect on the sound but accelerating does (the sound becomes more intense and prolonged as RPM climbs but momentarily vanishes each time i shift gears)
3) doesn't seem to be affected by ambient conditions (temperature, himidity, etc)

It's got me stumped but hopefully somebody here has encountered it.

Turn the heater to full hot. Does the sound go away? It may be water getting forced through the valve when the rpms rise because the water pump spins faster and builds more pressure.

I had a similar sound occur when the antifreeze gets low / air in the system. I have a heater core dribble leak that I have to top off every couple of months.

Great suggestion. I kept thinking it was related to the heater core but forgot to consider constant coolant loss (and resulting bubbles) from the warped head.

Will test next time i take it out. Trying to limit driving as the engine gets worse and a rebuild inches closer. This post was meant collect suggestions i could try all at once.

Thanks
