Silverton CO. 2016 4x4 adventure week 9/17-9/24
September 17th through September 24th 2016.
http://www.silvertoncolorado.com/

Some Isuzu wheelers I spoke with in Moab said they were interested in joining us in Silverton to do some epic trails in this amazing region so if you are still interested join us next month for some fun trails and epic scenery. We booked a house because the hotels are limited and either very expensive or old but still OK.

Lodging options Houses for rent: http://silvertonpropertymanagement.com/
Hotels/Motels: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g336 ... on_Colorad…
Camping: http://silvertonlakes.com/
There might be primitive camping nearby but I do not know where it is, so you will have to look around the forest service might have info on camping.
The town is very small so anywhere in town is a 5 min walk to Green Street (Main Street)

Christine this just might work for me, my grand daughter and I are trying to plan a trip around the Alpine Loop starting in Silverton. She is moving to Gunnison to attend college for a degree in outdoor recreation so I fixed up an 88 Trooper for her. She leaves the 17th August so she should be well set in by 9/17 and we can plan the trip. It would really be great to see every body again. Dave

It would be great to see you meet your grand daughter and do some trails with you and your grand daughter. I hope you can both make it.
We will be in Gunnison on August 19th thru the 22nd for the Gunnison car show event. We will be driving the Fieros for this event.

Some Land Cruiser buddies were down there last week. They got rained on much of the time but were fortunate that it wasn't snow (it did turn to snow, but after they left--Imogene, Black Bear, and Ophir were apparently closed for 3-4 days this week).

Dave--it is a small world, my friend! Do you remember when I visited you in Shell back in the summer of '12? (White Land Cruiser w/trailer). I'm now residing in Colo Sprgs! I get out to Crested Butte often (3 times this summer) for the trails...Schofield, Crystal City, Lead King, Paradise Divide, Pearl Pass.

I just got back from there, it is amazing country, not really all that challenging but it is an amazing time.
I unfortunately won't be able to go back so soon but I will keep my eyes out if you intend to go back in years following.

You are correct the area is not as challenging as Moab but has some challenging areas, Did you climb the wall in Poughkeepsie Gulch? What trails did you do?
We will take some pictures and videos of the up coming trip, I think we have 4 VXs and 2 Troopers in the group.

I tried the wall, would have made it if it hadn't have been soaking wet. I did poughkeepsie, black bear, imogene, hurricane, corkscrew. I'd still rather go to colorado than I would moab for some reason, I like the atmosphere better, so if this becomes a thing in the future I'll put it on my calendar

Just wish I had known you guys were going, Silverton is 250 miles from me :(

SAS I do remember you and hope to see you down there. It is now a confirmed going to be there, I will leave the 15th and meet Tabby in Gunnison the 16th and be in Silverton the 17th. I got a little behind on this thread the automatic notification of a new post hasn't popped up for a while. HMM? Christine thanks for the contacts looks like tent camping is fairly reasonable. See you in a couple weeks. Dave

Hey Dave! You bringing Rosie to Silverton?
We just lost our old 15 year old dog this week, so my Dave really wants to bring Nikki the Aussie (you saw her in Moab). We're staying at a motel a few blocks down from town.

Sue, I do not think the motel you are staying at allows pets, I think there are some that allow pets and I think one of the camp sites has cabins and they my allow dogs. Are you locked in to you lodging choice? Maybe you can change your lodging so you can bring the cute little dog with you.

PROSPECTOR MOTEL REGULATIONS
We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover cards, traveler's checks and cash. No personal or business checks, please.
We love almost all of nature's creatures, but due to allergy concerns of our guests, no animals of any kind are allowed on motel property. If any animal is discovered in a guest room, all occupants will be subject to immediate eviction and a substantial cleaning fee will be added to the room charge.
Check-out time is 10:30 A.M. If rooms are not vacated by then, at 10:31 A.M. a late charge will automatically be added on to the price of lodging.
No smoking is allowed in any guest rooms. Violators will be evicted and charged an additional room cleaning fee.
A non-refundable 50% room rate deposit is required for some, not all, seasonal reservations.

Yeah, I knew that so I searched out another motel cuz Dave really wants to have Nikki come along. Got a room at a neat looking place a few blocks further beyond the Prospector called Canyon View. Got a downstairs room. Just did it 2 days ago, and I have not cancelled my Prospector res yet...I'll do it soon.

Rosa will be with me she has become my permanent travel companion. I am not sure about accommodation, thinking tent but if the dog is an issue at Silverton Lake RV then will most likely do dispersed camping on forest service. I am just winging it this trip and planning as I go. Dave

Fantastic! I'll try to make it--won't know for certain until the week of the 12th. TJ (my oldest) will be upset that he cannot come--he drives the '88 Trooper. I may have to "borrow" it for this trip, hahaha.

Regarding camping, friends who went recently recommend Golden Horn area of South Mineral Creek (north of Silverton); dispersed camping, no fee, has a vault toilet.

Thanks SAS that is what we are looking for. Dave

Silverton was showing it's best side when we were their and the colors just kept getting brighter the whole week. Weather was fantastic for the first couple of days and then began changing to rain and finally snow. Did a lot of easy to moderate trails nothing too rough, I did try the Wall but the polished granite just did not let me get a grip even with both lockers engage. Tried several lines, got a front wheel way up like scary and gave up so the Wall won this time.
