It's the same AR5 as in the Solstice and Colorado etc with minor differences. They used the 4l30e in your trooper too, so I don't think the being paired with the modified 12bolt and possible v8 is a good argument lol. The AR5 imo is a smoother, quieter transmission, that would be my guess for its use.
I know, and from what I've read most like them and they hold up to LS swaps. Just curious to your reasoning behind the MUA5 being stronger.

Forgot to mention that the MUA5 has an integral tcase where the AR5 has a removable one, so it could have been to help with production since the auto tcase could be used for either transmission unlike before with the MUA5, and by full manual I mean the Tcase on the 95-earlier ones don't have a shift motor or anything like the later ones. You could use the 95-earlier auto case behind your AR5 to make it full manual. The AR5 will hold up to a stock LS swap on street tires, sticky tires and a good clutch and they won't. I'm just basing this on what I've seen between the failures on both. Mind you most of my AR5 opinions come from the LS swap stuff, but I've seen the MUA5 behind some turbocharged Isuzu's before making tons of power as well. I think that's what the turbocharged truck over in Australia is running and it's making a ton of power on a 6VD1. It's probably 6 in one half-dozen in the other

hey, great write up! i'm half way through my swap and ive run into some trouble, my truck wont turn over. no tranny in yet, just tried to fire it up because its been sitting for a while. my mode selector switch is still intact (has 8 wires, not 4?) and the cable shift indicator is in the correct position. any idea what might be keeping my truck from starting?

Neutral safety, you need to bypass the wires underneath on the mode selector. It's tied into the shifter, it will keep you from starting it with shifter removed even if the selector underneath is intact

i thought of that, so i rotated the mode selector switch to simulate the truck being in park and still nothing. right now the switch is taken off of the auto and hanging under the truck. im going to try the bypass tomorrow after work and see if it works. i felt my heart sink when i turned that key and nothing happened, after all the time and money ive dumped into this thing. ill post again with my findings tomorrow.

ya, shifter is out and there is no transmission in the truck, i put the shifter assembly on the floor and plugged the 2 connecters back into it and positioned the cable as if it were in park

Did you hook up the cable that runs to the steering column? Hook everything back up and see what it does

WOO HOO!! it fired up! the other end of the mode selector switch wiring harness had come unplugged (under airbox) when i took the auto tranny out. thanks for the help, i appreciate it!

Healthy gear wine(ie. not from worn parts) is music.

No you don't need to change, just need to either add a clutch switch in place of the neutral safety switch or bypass it. You'll need the transmission, flywheel, clutch, throwout bearing, clutch master and slave cylinder, some wiring etc etc. It's all mentioned in this thread

There are 2 sensors on the drivers side of the tranny that won't be used as well as the mode selector switch. The speedo and 4wd indicator switches use the same plugs from the auto harness so no wiring needed there. Now you will have to cut 4 wires off the mode selector switch to wire up your reverse lights and your clutch safety switch (if you use one). There is a white/green wire and a red/yellow wire, those 2 are for your reverse lights. You can wire them to the reverse switch in any order, the lights will work either way. Then is a black/white and a black/blue wire that are for your neutral safety switch. You can run these wires into the cab and install them on the clutch safety switch on the clutch pedal or you can just wire them together, but doing it this way will allow your truck to be started even if it's in gear and clutch isn't depressed.
Just copied the text, let me know if you need any more help

Just saw your PM but you'll have to pull the bulb. That light is for the auto trans and since you don't have it anymore, it's gonna come on. Pull the cluster and remove the bulb or put a piece of electrical tape over it if you don't want to do that
